OK - this may not be the ridiculously low prices some of you pay but I still think it's a heck of a buy.

I see an ad on CL for a 'full classic stereo system' for $485 so I open it and look.

Acoustat Monitor 4 with rebuilt Servo Charge direct drive OTL tube amps
Audio Research SP-7 Preamp
Yamaha T1000 tuner
Nakamichi BX-125 Cassette
Sony CD Changer CDP-C445

Immediately called him and told him I'd be over as soon as I could get home and get packing material to transport safely in my truck. I get over there and there's not so much as a fingerprint on anything. It's all absolutely perfect. He's the original owner of everything and has all the manuals.

The speakers alone are worth more that the price. I had a pair of the Acoustat Monitor 4's probably 25 years ago and always said if I ever had a chance, I'd buy them again. Mark one off the list. :thmbsp:

They're just the way I remembered them :music:

Not sure how much of the other stuff I'll keep but whatever I get rid of will go towards mods to the amps to raise their performance to a whole 'nother level.

Heck of a system for < $500

Thanks for the link to the pics. I'll post some others that are on the web and also take some of my particular pair in the next couple days. I have to pull them apart (amps) to take pics for Mike Savuto who is going to be doing the mods on them.

Some online pics

Back of speakers with rear grille off - for scale, those are 60" tall and 37" wide

Amps sitting in back of stand - though this is a shot of the same amps in Monitor 3's

Front view from Bolly's Link - though mine have stands below.

Good grab, Bryan. I was thinking about it, but have too much gear already. I was worried it would fall into unappreciative and undeserving hands, so I aam very glad to see you got it. :thmbsp:

Incredible purchase. I was contemplating driving from Michigan... Glad you got it. BTW, the seller had listed them as Acoustat X. Was he wrong? Either way.. fantastic deal for a fantastic system.

Yes - he just read the back of the servo amps which ALL said model X on them. The X only has 3 panels and the frame is different. These are definitely Monitor 4's.

If she was my wife she would think "they are some big f**k off speaker, where in the hell do you plan to put them"

and then she'd say it

LOL - yeah, they aren't exactly unobtrusive.

I am married and she loves them. We had a pair of these when we were first married a long time ago and sold them due to the high voltages and potential safety issues with little kids. When I set up this pair in the living room and turned them on, she just got a big smile on her face and said " I forgot how nice those sounded "

She's waffling right now. She loves them in the living room where she'll use them more but I think they'll end up in my 'man cave' downstairs and the Dynaudios will likely come upstairs.

I'm pretty lucky. She's VERY tolerant of my addiction and loves music as much as I do.
