Clarence "Frogman" Henry passes

Although he wasn't consider a "star", I had great affection for his limited library of hits and unique vocal style. Clarence "Frogman" Henry died on April 7, 2024 at age 87.

May he rest in peace.

Having grown up in New Orleans, Clarence Frogman Henry is a legendary star around here.

How did he get the name 'Frogman'?

"Henry used his trademark croak to improvise the song "Ain't Got No Home" one night in 1955. Chess Records' A&R man Paul Gayten heard the song, and had Henry record it in Cosimo Matassa's studio in September 1956. Initially promoted by local DJ Poppa Stoppa, the song eventually rose to number 3 on the national R&B chart and number 20 on the US pop chart.[4] The gimmick earned Henry his nickname of 'Frogman' and jump-started a career that endured until his death.[1]"

Frogman also joined the Beatles on their 1964 US tour, having met them in England in 1961. He claimed to only have made $750 a week for the tour but nonetheless had a great time.

That's a lot of money in 1964 for a Blues, R&B guy. It's probably 5 times more than what he was used to.
