Classic speakers for a Marantz 2225

When I picked up our Marantz 2225, it came with a set of HH Scott S-11 speakers. They actually don't sound too bad, and will probably benefit from a recap themselves. And perhaps we'll keep them paired with the unit.

But I was wondering what speaker was often paired with a receiver like the Marantz 2225 back in circa 1976 that would have been considered somewhat high end and a good match.

Well, you may want to look at earlier speakers for that model. If you go with something from the mid '70's, you're going to need a very-efficient speaker, and even then you may be limited to something bookshelf-sized or Large Advent-sized at best. But if you look at earlier speakers, you'll have more to choose from for sure. The mid to late '70's was all about big, high-powered receivers and amps, and power-hungry speakers to go with them. But there ARE some exceptions. Dynacos would work. And Wharfedale had it's E** series at that point (The E50 and E70 MIGHT be a possibility). And most tube-era speakers are by and large VERY-efficient (except perhaps the AR stuff and some others), and 25 watts per channel can take you quite-far, so you can choose some very-large speakers (That receiver would do fine with my main speakers, which are like 32" tall and almost 30" wide, but that's because they're very-efficient, and efficiency is what you need for that receiver).

How big of a room are we talking? And what kind of music would you be listening to with them?

Thanks, yeah efficiency is going to be key.

This will be going into my 14 year old son's room, which is about 12'x25' in size. He'll be listening to rock/pop I'm sure.

I'm even thinking about just upgrading the Scott cabinets with some new pro drivers that are high efficiency.

A mid-line JBL, like a Decade L-26, would be a perfect match for this. They are magic with my 2230.
 
When I sold 2220/2225/2230 the most commonly paired speaker was the L-26, also the L-19 and L-36. All great sounding speakers in that line.
 
Acoustic Research 18's, and Smaller advents both sound great and get plenty loud with my 2230. I also have run a set of newer Acoustic Research Holographic Imaging M5's from the early 90's....they are more efficient than the others I've mentioned, and sound very good with the 2230.
 
I am running Scott S10s in kitchen with a 15 watt receiver. Seems just right. Why not refurb the 11s? I would suggest a 14yo might do well with a system like that to start before moving to a classic rig. If your budding audiophile understands such things as clipping, he is well ahead of where I was at 30. Just saying

EPI 100/Epicure 10's seem to work well with anything. I know they're great with my h/k-330c, which is in the ballpark power level of that 2225.

Yeah, I'll probably just refresh the S-11 speakers. I actually do like them.

But I was just curious what other options would be recommended.

So, has anyone refreshed or hot-rodded some old Scott S-11 speakers? :thmbsp:

If that Marantz is a mid-70s unit then the HH Scott S-11s predate it by some. So that it is that Marantz which is the "newer" piece.

Dynacos might be OK with that Marantz. But to tell you the truth I prefer my Dynacos with the HK 430 by a wide margin.

Perhaps some KLH 32s might be a better match? I run some KLH 17s on a 2265 and that's not bad. I also have a set of the S-11s on a VR 5000 (Vector Research), not bad, not bad at all. The VR 5000 is a 44 watt x 2 receiver. Don't sell those S-11s short!

The KLH's, Advents, AR's, Dynaco, EPI's all would "normally" match well especially if it were jazz, accoustic, classical but as you said most likely it will be rock-pop being played. The smaller JBL's or even Pioneer HPM 40's would be a good match.
 
I would go with either one of the Marantz Imperial models or a HD speaker by Marantz. HD-660, 770 or 880 would all sound great. There is an article on the AK forum right now with consumer reports testing speakers in this era. I would defn check it out. The marantz imperial was i believe second best and would have to believe there speaker would match their receiver better anyhow!
