What is the best method/products for both cleaning and preserving the brushed aluminum face plates of our vintage Marantz receivers? I know that warm water and mild soap are recommended, but any specific recommendations of product? I recently bought a receiver in absolutely stunning condition -- it looks like it came out of a time machine. Since I realize that it probably didn't, I was wondering what product might have been used to create such a high degree of lustre on the face plate, in particular. I'd like to keep it looking this way. Any specific recommendations? Thank you.

I always remove the faceplate carefully and completely from the chasis before attempting to clean it. I begin by placing it in a mild dishwashing liquid detergent then after drying, I spray with Glass Plus or any non-ammonia glass cleaner. Finally I apply a coat of "Life Guard" on the brushed aluminum area only (not the black plastic inner faceplate) that I spray on, let it sit for a few minutes then wipe off. Life Guard really makes the Marantz brushed aluminum shine brightly. It is available at most home and garden type superstores. I do this once a year to all my Marantz equipment.

If it still looks "stunning" after 30 years don't put anything on it! It's doing just fine on it's own. Just keep it dusted. Ask again in another 30 years.

And if it looks like it hasn't been cleaned in 30 years...this IS the stuff I use,makes it look like the day you brought it home brand new,out of the box.It's Flitz Stainless Steel & Chrome Cleaner.Has always worked for me. Rob
 
I've used Pledge for 20+ years on my systems and no scratches. I just use a very soft cotton cloth to shine up and clean many pieces, even the dust cover to my TT. Just don't spray direct on the equipment as it gets in the corners. Spray on the cloth, fold it over to force it to soak in evenly, then gently clean up everything. The wax in Pledge I've noticed shines up gear nicely. I would imagine it leaves a bit of a protective wax coating to prevent oxidation.

All right, these are the kind of replies I was hoping for. Thank you very much! My 2325 is in perfect condition, but the face plate on my 2245, while very clean and nice, is just a bit duller in comparison. I want to find the Fitz or Life Guard products. I also have some stainless cleaner/wax that is in an aerosol can that does an amazing job on my stainless grill. I suspect it might do the trick, also. I've got a Home Depot and a Lowes nearby. I'll take a look tomorrow morning and see what I can find. Thanks again!

My process for restoring a Marantz unit is pretty simple. I first remove the faceplate and knobs. I wash them thoroughly with warm water and Dawn dishwashing liquid. After drying I polish with Meguiar's Car Cleaner Wax. If the faceplate is particularly dirty, as was my recently purchased 2265B, I use a silver polish to remove the difficult to remove stains and marks. Then, I proceed with the Meguiar's. Lastly, I wipe the faceplate down with Hope's Perfect Glass which is available at Bed Bath and Beyond or Linens and Things. This method will restore a unit back to nearly new condition.
 
I also do the dishwashing soap in the sink with it removed and finish it off with Pledge and a nice micro fiber buff afterward. Works great. Seems like the Pledge evens things out.
