Cleaning and restoring console components

I am in the process of restoring a 1960 stereo console and am having trouble with cleaning the 50+years of dirty hand grime/grease/oil on the control knobs and faceplates. The pieces are both painted plastic (for the knobs) and painted metal (for the faceplates). I don't want to scrub them too hard or use any harsh chemicals for fear of stripping the delicate paint and as a result, the orginal labels/lettering. Dish soap got off the easy stuff but it almost looks like the previous owner was a mechanic and they had motor oil on their hands when touching this thing. Does anyone have any secrets or tips on how to clean this kind of stuff?

For paint, maybe try automotive cleaner wax. Just be gentle with it.

I use goop hand cleaner. Its mild and picks up dirt and grease. I think any of those gel hand cleaners with no abrasives in it would work about the same. I use a toothbrush or q-tip to scrub and wipe it off with somthing reasonably lent free.

I do advise testing it in a discrete location first but its never bothered any paint of finish I've used it on.

Thanks. I tried GooGone today and it actually cleaned a lot more of the stain than I was expecting. I've never heard of goop but I'll look into it.

If you know what GoJo is, same thing if he's talking about the one I think he is. Basically kerosene jelly, white funky stuff. They also have an orange cleaner, with or without grit. I think you'd want non-grit.
