Old Stuff New Stuff As long as it's Good Stuff

House is going on 6 years and the carpets have never been cleaned. The need for cleaning was there after six years let alone with a cat and dog thrown in. Didn't look dirty and no stains that is until Emily my Corgi cacked up the aftermath of dark colored treat. Six years and 2.5 of those with the superstar of shedding then toss in a cat it was time.

Moved most the furniture out of the bedroom that is the first of 3 rooms and 2 larger area rugs. Had to vacuum the carpet 3 times to get all the corgi hair that was hiding under that moved furniture. I can tell you a Roomba doesn't cut it. I can run the Roomba on carpet then run the my upright. The upright will pick-up over 10 times what the Roomba did plus a lot more dirt/dander. With that done time to shampoo.

The thought of lugging a big rental back and forth then maneuvering that big machine in a small house wasn't appealing so decided to buy a machine. It's a Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution Pet 1548 their middle of the road machine. Price for the Bissell was good but what they want for cleaning fluid is ridiculous. Luckily it came with a couple of small bottles that got the bedroom and an area rug done. I'll make my own cleaning fluid from now on. There's plenty of recipes on the net.

It did a real good job of both cleaning and sucking the water back up. Really no difference between a rental and the Bissell except that the Bissell only holds a gallon so you have to fill-up more often. Other than that much the same. Easy one handed use. Finished about 4 in the afternoon, By 11pm the carpet was almost dry the area rug only took about 2 hours if that.

Two dogs, and we bought a commercial Rug Doctor beast from Costco. One of the best purchases we have ever made. Powerful and durable as heck (bullet proof). Had it probably around 15 years and has never missed a beat. We buy Zep commercial cleaning solution, 4 gallons at a time from the rain-forest named, deliver to your door site - and clean our carpet at least once a month (a LOT cheaper that way). It’s also wide, so cleaning the carpet is quick and painless.
 
I've owned a Hoover for probably 20+ years. Works pretty good and water suction is good. Saved me $$ in the long run. Wife doesn't want/allow shoes on the carpet and dogs been dead a few years so usage isn't often now. Dog was a cockapoo - non shedding.
 
I always get a rental here, tried professional cleaners both steam and not steam, and using the rental I can do the job 5x better than them.

Have used Bisell steam cleaners for yrs ! One learns that skill quickly with kids and pets in the house !
 
We moved into the new to us house and our labradoodle finds spots to relieve herself, I’m suspecting previous owners dog was usin as outplace. I’ve tried various store bought cleaning chemicals with shop vac sucking until near dry. The best is simple. 12% hydrogen peroxide from Home Depot. You can soak and leave alone for hours. Then come back, re-soak and vacuum out. May have to do that few times but the stain is eventually gone!
 
I gave up on wall-to-wall carpet decades ago.

We put down tile everywhere and cover a lot of it with big edge bound "thick" wool ($$$) carpets of choice, no pad.
We spray them with water/detergent from a hand sprayer, scrub them with an electric disc/circular floor scrubber, soak them with water to rinse, thoroughly suck it out with monster wet vac, run fan for a few hours till completely dry.

When time comes to REALLY clean one, I take it outside, drape it over a lot of lawn chairs, work it over with the pressure washer and detergent, flood rinse with the hose, suck it out with monster wet vac, let dry in the sun and breeze, relay.

It's like this. I asked myself, do I you want it clean and nose irritant free, or do I just want it top groomed in place with a steamer/cleaner?

Carpet and pad limits cleaning options. Carpet over wood limits cleaning options. Carpet over concrete is the worst, good luck getting pet odors out of unsealed concrete. So, I went with the tile over suspected pet contaminated concrete. No regrets, at all.

I like the $25 thrift store Kirby vacuums for daily cleaning.
 
When we bought our home in town 5 years ago, we got to pick all of the colors. When they asked about the carpet, we said "none". After living in the country over 30 years with the associated dust, kids, and pets, we found that carpet is nothing but a filth trap.

Our new home has WPC throughout, with area or throw rugs where needed. They get dirty, you throw them out and buy new ones.

We have a EUFY robo-vac that wifey runs daily. All the "stuff" it picks up would normally get ground into carpet.

That's what I was thinking too.
I breath good now. Less allergies.
 
We ripped up all of the carpet and had the hardwood floors refinished. They are very easy to vacuum and an occasional damp mopping.

Having 4 kids I’ve had 2 Bissell carpet cleaners over the last 20 yrs and both performed very well !
 
We just rid the house of all carpeting, and refinished the hardwood floors. Hardwoods are so much easier to maintain.

I grew up with carpet, but now I loathe it.
