Cleaning Faceplates

What do you recommend for thoroughly cleaning the faceplate such as is on the QX-949? Removed it, tried warm water with a mild soap but it does a so-so job. I don't want to use something like 409 until I checked with those who know. Thanks again.

Search the forum for "cleaning faceplate" or "faceplate polish". Many good threads, lots of repeat information.

My personal recommendation: Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream. [Grace à MAXZ] Bought it at Murray's Discount Auto Parts. It's the only thing I've ever used, but I assume other "aluminum" or "mag wheel" polish would have similar pleasing results.

I had a QX-949 for a while. It was ugly (or so I thought), but bridged to stereo, it sounded awesome. Quad receivers and amps bridged back to stereo are one of audio's sleepers.

+1 ... great product ... it take nicotine and oxidization off without any elbow grease needed .... I've never had any problems with silk screened lettering coming off ... many AK'ers say soap and water are safer but I tend to disagree having to scrub the faceplate you are more likely to mess up the lettering.
Kinda falls along the lines of sharper knife less dangerous ... Much less force required ...

I usually wipe the mud off with my hand, then carefully pick the gravel out, paying particular attention to any gravel/grit near my eyes.

Oops, sorry, thought you said faceplant. Never mind.

Just got done polishing up the faceplate of my SX-950 before reassembling it. I use a little Scotts Liquid Gold on a rag - it takes that dry, spotty look away and replaces it with a nice luster. It doesn't have any effect on the lettering and it leaves the faceplate looking really good. Don't spray it on the faceplate and don't get it on the plastic lens - spray it into a rag and use that to polish out the stainless and chrome only. For the plastic lens I use plexiglass polish to remove fine scratches and simple furniture polish like Pledge and a micro-fiber rag if the lens just needs to be touched up. I use Pledge on an old toothbrush for the knobs unless they're really gunked up, in which case I would use Windex or Simple Green on an old toothbrush to scrub the little grooves clean, then hit them with some Pledge and buff them out.

I believe there are many good choices , and a few poor ones. Can someone here come up with a list of "cleaners" that are NOT safe to use?
