Cleaning Grill Cloth

I have some JBL speakers with the orange grill cloths..and yes, I've thought about changing colors, but I kind of dig the orange....anyway, the cloth is in great condition..no tears, snags, etc...but has some stains on it. It looks like the the grills were kept off the speakers and stored...dust got on them and then they got wet....there is no water damage or anything to the speakers, so I assume they weren't on the speakers when it happened.

Any suggestions on how to clean grill cloth?

Take them to a drycleaner. The advice you get will be free and the cleaning might be cheep? It is worth a try.

If it were me, I'd try spray Shout. But there is always the chance that any cleaning product will damage or stain the fabric worse. My guess is that's a synthetic cloth, which might make it more possible to get the stains out. I can't say I have a lot of experience with this, so it's guesswork. I wish you good luck with it.

I may have to replace it...but I want to try to clean it.....if I have to replace it...know of any place to get original JBL orange grill cloth?

btw, which models are your sansui? what about the hafler. Do they have good synergy?

Those are SP 200's...I have SP 3000's upstairs....the hafler isn't working...bad caps I think.

I had pretty good luck with spray on carpet cleaner. It is made for synthetic fibers, it is designed to remove stains and it vacuums out.

thats too bad about the Hafler. And the SP 200 is a very nice speaker. Ive had a pair. But sold them out of necessity. They were gone in less then a day. Buyer was very happy for a hundered bones.

I do carpet and upholstery cleaning and would pre spray this with a fabric detergent with a bit of hydrogen peroxide in it.
About 3%.
Other cleaners with the Oxy action {Hydrogen Peroxide} in it will/should work on the browning stain.
If you can get hold of a wet and dry vacuum cleaner to extract it should be Ok.
You may have to spray and agitate the fabric {Rub it, not to hard}and extract couple of times.:thmbsp:

You might look like a total weirdo doing this but, how about taking them to the car wash and using the upholstery vac/shampooer?

Are the frames plastic? If so I have used upholstery cleaner and a garden hose then sitting in the sun to dry before with very good results.

I would try and clean them with what ever method you finally decide on. If you do not like the results you then can put new fabric on in your pick of colors.

I use a mix of products so unless you could get some off a local carpet cleaner or product supplier.
Your average carpet cleaner may not use the H202.

If you get one of those carpet cleaning products from the supermarket that states it has Oxy action or relates to this it should work on the browning.

A lot of these can be sprayed on and left to dry.

After you spray it on try and agitate the fabric gently.

Don't rub it excessively as you can fray the fibre.

Vacuum it after drying.

If you see a carpet cleaner in your travels it might pay to have a talk to him, they might do it for nothing if their gear is set up:thmbsp:

The frames are wood and the cloth is glued to the frame..makes kind of nervous getting them too wet.
