Cleaning overspray off faceplate

Tony Merkel

New Member
Hey everyone. Picked up a non working technics SA-5760 to restore. One issue is it must have been in someone's shop cause there is white overspray all over the faceplate. I am wondering if anyone knows a way to clean it off without taking any lettering off.

Thanks in advance.

If it was me, I'd make a probably-futile attempt with something like high-percentage rubbing alcohol, and when that didn't work, I'd try lighter fluid (naptha). Initial testing on some not-very-visible part of the lettering would be a good idea. Also don't let either solvent soak for very long. But neither of these solvents should aggressively attack the original paint.

And BTW, welcome to AK. The TIA suggests that you might not plan to post any more, but if you care to, I would love to hear how you happened to choose the "Tuners" forum for your post. (The forum is meant for matters of tuning in radio stations, so it isn't the best place to ask about paint. Probably the "DIY" forum would have been best.) Not picking on you in particular - it happens a lot. I'm just sincerely interested in why it happens.

If the solvent is water or Alcohol a Q tip soaked to dampen then wipe might be all that is needed. On some panels with over spray I used a mild auto plastic headlight restorer rub on wipe off paste.

Removing the panel from the unit first. Try soaking in water then gently washing with a soft clean cloth with soap.
