Cleaning pots, sliders and switches on MAC 1900 - Which Deoxit to use?

Not Fragile

Hi all,

Time to clean up the pots, sliders and switches on my MAC 1900 but I'm confused by all the Deoxit products. Can you tell me which is/are best?

Thanks!

I use D5 for switches. I use D100 for pots - would likely be fine for sliders also. It's what I came up with after having the same confusion as you, and still not sure. Last time I read the "idiot's guide" it used "Deoxit" as a generic term and didn't get into the various formulas available. Caig's site wasn't a ton of help either.

I used D5 on my 1900 and it destroyed the balance pot. The tracks just dissolved. Not sure what happened, but I don't use D5 on MAC controls any more.

I called CAIG at the phone number on their website 858 486 8388 and the gal that I spoke with at tech help did in fact warn about using a certain Caig product on vintage equipment. She was pleasant and most helpful.

That must have been some time ago. This sticky is 16 pages long, with quite a few references to the different DeOxit formulations and applications.

Yup ... don't know if it's a formula change or what, but D100 is recommended by many for pots and sliders. Probably some new EPA friendly propellant in the D5 that's causing concern, coupled with 40 year old materials.

Not much of a change for me here other than buying a bottle of D100. I've always sprayed the D5 into a needle bottle for pots anyway ... less overspray issues and better control getting the cleaner exactly where it needs to go.

Handy little devils they are.

Is this the way we work around here now? Not feelin the good karma.

What I meant quite innocently was it is better to get the information directly from the source for a complete understanding of the CAIG products. I did try to help by posting their phone number.
Looks like you are the argumentative one.

I believe Caig Faderlube is designed specifically for pots. I generally use D5 followed by Faderlube - never had an issue.

Faderlube(F-5) is specifically designed to clean and lube slider's. Use nothing else on them, and use the F-5 sparingly. Otherwise if it go's in/out or Round and Round or back and forth, use D-5 (DeOxit) for general cleaning, followed up with GOLD (G-5) for Lubrication of the pot/switch.
DeOxit D-5 (RED CAN)
DeOxit FADERLUBE F-5 (Green Can)
DeOxit GOLD G-5 (Gold Can).

These are the big (for them) spray can's. Formulations are 5% Active ingredient, with propellants, etc. If you have excessively DIRTY pots/switchs etc. You can get D-100 formulations. These are supposedly 100% active ingredient in a smaller squeeze bottle with a needle sized tip.

D-5 is D-100l thinned with naptha to a 5% mix. A 25ml bottle of d-100l goes a long way. I've used Radio shacks version of Caigs mechanic-all, a multi-purpose spray lube w/100l.
