Cleaning speakers

I picked up some vintage Sansui SP-X6700's but there is some crap (guessing mold) underneath the mesh covers on some of the drivers and around them. They sound fine supposedly, but I'm thinking it can't be good to keep them the way they are. Any advice on how to get these things cleaned up without breaking anything?

It might help if you post some pix, no matter how disgusting, so we have a better idea what we're talking about.
