Cleaning tarnish under MC30

How to clean the tarnish under MC30?

One of my MC30's is badly tarnished under the chassis. I tried a number of cleaning solutions including products called Tarnix, Brasso, etc., but nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Kind of funky looking but it can't be anything but rust. You can try CLR, it comes in a gray, rectangular, plastic bottle and is available at hardware and grocery stores. Keep it wet constantly for about 8 hours and see how much progress you make. Rubber gloves. I've used this on Mc chassis and it works, but very slow.

Or, you can just use chrome polish or Wenol. However, if Brasso didn't dent it then it's unlikely that this will work very well. BTW, Brasso has an abrasive in it so keep that in mind.

Those 3 horizontal caps on the right side should be changed. Read through Terry's excellent write up on MC-30s in "McIntosh Hints and Kinks."

Definately in need of re-capping. Looks like rust on the chassis to me. Steel wool might help in getting rid of it. Be sure to vacuum out the loose particles.

You might want to install new modern signal caps first. That is a real mixture of parts in there. Any thing that will stop the corrosion is fine. By the looks of things that transformer is running very hot though which is part of the discoloration.

Thanks,

The under side only has a light chrome flash, I clean the crud off with ammonia and don't do much more. I always start with a new bias supply and main filter cap when working on a 30, this way you have a good power supply as a starting point.

Thanks for the suggestions and keep them coming.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that this picture was taken a while ago, right after I bought the amp. I recapped the amp since then and it's running very cool now.

The reddish area you see is I believe copper and that's what I got after attempting to clean the tarnish in that area. Removing that much of tarnish took a lot of effort and I am hoping to find a chemical solution so that I would also be able to clean the hard to reach areas, such as the area around the tube sockets, etc.
