Hey AKers,

Quick question. If I wanted to "polish" parts of a TT like the tonearm or face plate (top of a TT, like on a Thorens TD-160), could I use something like Bar Keeper's Friend, or would I risk damaging something or wiping off letters? Please let me know what you have successfully used in the past!

Thanks!

You best not touch any lettering with abrasive cleaners or risk losing the lettering. Simple soap and water solution is best, but if you’re determined to use those types of chemical cleaners, avoid applying and wiping on any lettering.

Most metals you'll find on a turntable have been anodized. Remove or damage that and it's game over. Avoid anything that might even be slightly abrasive.

What table are you cleaning?

That's not what I would use. For a metal polish I would use Autosol or something similar, maybe Mother's?

I do have Mother's and it did an excellent job of polishing my TD-160's outer platter rim.

I have a few tables (please see my signature). I was just thinking of using something to shine up tonearms and parts of the TT like that. The TD-160 would also be the plate at the top of the TT.
