Cleveland Record Stores

So my wife and I will be moving to Kent OH from Minneapolis end of the month. Any AK'ers from the area know of any good record stores. I heard they used to have a great jazz store back in the day. The fun begins in packing all this gear soon! I will miss the Fetus and Treehouse Records

It all depends on your taste but I can recommend Square Records in Akron and Bent Crayon or My Minds Eye in Cleveland for "independent" music.

If you're interested in "used" albums, you might try Play It Again Sam, on Madison Ave. in Lakewood. It's about an hour from Kent.

MY MIND'S EYE!

HUGE selection of 45s, lots of very obscure stuff, and VERY reasonable prices! The only shop in Cleveland I wasn't disappointed with.

Bent Crayon is a great store, but they're tailored towards a select group of people who are into new releases of experimental and electronic. This store is probably best suited for someone who is looking for a particular album in those genres. Personally, my favorite store is Blue Arrow Records on the east side! Friendly staff, great all-around selection, and they have a bunch of lovely cats just hanging out!

Records in Kent

You won't need to go to Cleveland. Kent has two stores that carry vinyl and both carry some new releases.

Last Exit Books & Records on E. Main (Jason-owner) and Vinyl Underground (Pete-owner) on Water St.

I've bought and traded with both. They're very fair on trades and they have plenty to choose from, they're my go to stores in this area.

Kent's a nice place to park it and walk the downtown, highly recommend. Welcome to NE Oh.

CD Game exchange in Solon has lots of records, dirt cheap. I found 3 audiophile pressings recently, I think I paid $3.00 each.

I met him in Tommy's restaurant.

Well - ours was not really by chance, my family is from Cleveland, My grandfather was a bandleader in the 30s - and my dad was pals with Harvey growing up...Harvey was like the older guy who knew all the cool jazz records. We reconnected with him when the Amercian Splendor comics started coming out. Met him downtown (it was at one of those stores) - and had lunch at Corky and Lennys.

Corky and Lenny's is still in business, BTW. Now there is only the place on Chagrin and 271.

Columbus is about an hour and a half from you but there are some great stores there as well.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. Doesn't look like I'll have to look far. I think we passed Water St when we visited Kent last week. Great stores in the city and the surrounding areas. I would have loved to met Harvey Pekar. My uncle was a DJ in Kent around the late sixties/early seventies. He was an owner of a Sansui 9090DB which was my earlier experiences hearing Hendrix and Cream.

91.5 is great and I used to work at WKSU so i'm clearly biased towards them. The Kent Stage is a good place to check out a variety of live acts. They tend to gear more towards folk, but since it's a college town (er...my college town) there are a number of other places to check out bands. It's been a while for so unfortunately i'm sure the venues I used to frequent are gone.
