I opened the Smilies page and got a popup window selling audio amps from somewhere called Click Potato. Does AK have a new ad sponsor, or do I have an adware infection? I suspect the latter because it just didn't seem to be the AK style, but just thought I'd check.

Good idea. Every now and then I throw the whole barrage at my computer. Spybot, Adaware, SuperAntispyware, and CCleaner. Most of the time each of the first three will find stuff. None of them seem to get it all.
 
Yep I haven't run anti-adware software for awhile, but Avast is always on so I was getting complacent. Found 51 items related to 5 adware packages. Musta stepped in a pile of somethin'... I agree it helps to run more than one because they do have their specialites.
 
I've been very happy running the free version of malwarebytes - it's removed some nasty redirect virus's.
Now I'm a hero with my wife and daughter and that's always good.
