I don't think there are any tube amps out there that will appreciate the .7 ohm impedance on the highs, including the 2301. A pair of 501s was probably a much more logical choice.

It's shipping cost and duty.

The duties on shipping a 35 thousand dollar pair of amps to Munich is pretty huge, not to mention the chances of them getting lost, damaged, etc.

I can imagine they only want so many B-Stock versions of those amps around...

It shouldn't be a problem. My CLS's go down to 1 ohm or less and sound terrific driven by my 275. Remember, it's ss amps that don't like a shorted (0 ohm) speaker load and tube amps that don't like no (infinite ohm) speaker load. I know there must be a reason that this idea got started that tube amps can't drive (low impedance) stats but Peter Walker himself (Quad) drove the Quad 57's with his little 15watt Quad tube amp. Not only that, but the 57's impedance dropped down at the mid-bass, the worst possible place in the frequecy spectrum :yes: because there's so much energy at that frequency. It's the ss amps that can start to oscillate and blow up speakers of/when they run out of current. Tbe amps clip very gently and McIntosh tube amps are especially forgiving :thmbsp:

I just came back from Munich. That was 1200km drive from Croatia and back. Macs were on display lined up on shelves, powered up so blue lights were on.
In one room among other electronics was 7000/301 combination and speakers were Martin Logan or Wilson Duettes. During two days my timing was always bad so I haven t had a chance to hear it. In another bigger room Martin Logan presented CLX full range esl. It is built on CLS experience but smaller in size. It was driven by a pair of 501s, C500 (or 1000 not sure) and Meitner cd player. I am big fan of esl sound (Quad 989 and 501s at home) and immediately liked the sound. Very transparent, fast with solid bottom end and airy highs. It was voted for the best of the show by german "Audio" magazine.
