Coffee

A lot of smart people here so I imagine quite a few drink coffee. Many benefits to drinking coffee, high in antioxidants just for starters, so I was wondering what others might be brewing as I sit here waiting on my coffee maker.

I've tried a lot of coffee in my yrs here on earth, but this is my favorite, and luckily it's cheap lol.

When in California I shopped at WallyWorld just as here in Fl for the most part. One day they didn't have my coffee, so I went online to try and find it, they were the only distributor in Cal. Thankfully it was due to a packaging change and it wasn't long before they had it back on the shelves.

This interim when they didn't led me to doing some research on 8 O'clock Bean, and I was very surprised to find its origin was with A&P, and its rated as one of the best coffees in the world.

@Grenadeslio Are we talking about coffee in general in this thread, or brands (& types of coffee), specifically?

Espresso addict here... I've had my share of espresso makers over the last 10 years or so, to the point where I can't imagine a morning without coffee! :) And yes, I do have pictures to share, I just want to make sure that we're on the same side.

Let's see those pics, coffee is the elixir of the gods.

I have been drinking 8 O'clock coffee for longer than I can remember. It isn't as good as it used to be. Something happened about 10 years ago and it wasn't for the better.

While I feel it is a good everyday budget concious coffee, it isn't anywhere near a best coffee in the world status IMO.

Ah...coffee, the elixir/panacea for the many, who enjoy, and in some cases help survive the morning and all that goes with it.

What would we do without this morning beverage?

Can you imagine the uproar if there weren't any?

I can't!

I've been drinking 8 O'clock for many decades and its awesome, especially when taking price into consideration. Back in 2008 when doing the research on it Wikipedia mentioned it being rated one of the best in the world. Where they got the info I can't remember and the info on Wiki has changed.

Apparently they were bought out in 2006, not sure if that's when you noticed a change.

Eight O'Clock Coffee is the brand line of coffee products currently manufactured by the Eight O'Clock Coffee Company, a subsidiary of Tata Global Beverages, which is headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey; its coffee production plant is in Landover, Maryland. Tata Global Beverages has owned Eight O'Clock Coffee since 2006

Eight O'Clock Coffee was created by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (later A&P) in 1859, in the latter company's founding year. Despite selling off the brand in 2003, A&P continued to sell Eight O'Clock Coffee in its family of stores until the supermarkets closed in late 2015. Eight O'Clock is also sold in other supermarkets across the country.

In the 1930s, Eight O'Clock coffee had gained over a quarter of the U.S. market share. By 1930, it was the most popular brand of coffee in the United States

In 2009, Consumer Reports rated Eight O'Clock Coffee's 100 percent Colombian brew as the "best buy" for ground brews, beating well-known brands, such as Folgers, Maxwell House and Starbucks.[4]

I tend to use Yuban as our universal base for daily drinking, and to stretch out some of the blended bean combos I make on the weekend ...
its got a nice taste, not much acid and is consistent from can to can.
I don't do flavor-oil sprayed beans (Hazelnut, etc) -
I tend to more natural beans such as Ethiopian Harrar and Sumatra Mandheling.

Yuban is related to Maxwell House - a blend my parents had all the time - so...
Here is a link to a story on Tom Petty searching for the perfect cup of coffee

There's a Coffee War going on right now up here!

McDonald's vs Tim Horton's, and my money's on the former.

At Mac's right now, $1.00 any size, a free refill if over 65, and a freebie after seven cups.

The Brazilian owned Timmy's is hurtin'

2006 sounds about right when the change took place. I seem to remember a thread here on AK about it.

Beating the flavor of Folgers and Maxwell House is a pretty low bar IMO.

Don't forget Starbucks lol.

And that was "ground" coffee, something I don't do. I grind just enough beans for each pot just before brewing.

Eight O'Clock Coffee ranked No. 1 -- the best combination of taste and price -- out of 19 ground coffees. At $6.28 per lb, it topped the taste tests and cost less than half the price of brands including Gloria Jean's and Peet's, Consumers Reports said in a news release.

I used to have a friend was was a Volvo mechanic in Boulder Co.
He used to drive to Guatemala (yes drive) every year to spend his winters down there and live like a king for pennies on the dollar.
He would return every spring with hundreds of pounds of raw coffee beans from a specific plantation.
The guy spent quite some time working with a friend who was a roaster.
After a whole lot of experimentation with this particular bean, they came up with the perfect roast.

I don't care how much or little you spend on a pound of coffee, there was nothing better on the planet!

I lost contact with him years ago when he made the stupid mistake of trying to bring Mexican fireworks across the border into the US and went to jail.

He ruined me on coffee forever.

The wife comes home with various brands which are still pretty good, but consistency seems to be a real hit and miss with most brands these days, even including the store bought Starbucks.

8 O'clock coffee really brings back memories of my childhood. My Great-grandmother was an avid A&P shopper (local neighborhood) and always had sealable metal antique canister that was filled w/ 8 O'clock coffee that she would have ground at the store fresh.

I was a kid and did not drink coffee until my late teens but I never forgot the smell :) of the fresh ground coffee in the canister. Picture of cannister below.

She used to have me scoop it out and help her make coffee for herself, family and guests. Grandma passed in the early 70's and my Dad inherited the canister and used it till he passed in the early 2000's. Now I use that same cannister and sometimes fill it w/ fresh ground 8 O'clock coffee from Buehler's (a local grocery store).

Don't make many pots of coffee in recent years as I've taken to using Keurig coffee pods. Good for days when I don't drink a lot of coffee .. my wife is not a coffee drinker .. she prefers tea. 8 O'clock coffee makes pods too. I buy those when they are on sale.

Ah, good ol' A&P!
Sad to hear it's gone 'ninnernational' (what doesn't Tata own now?)

My first 'paycheck' job was at A&P (late 60s), where I discovered that coffee, and loved the sound of the grinders and smell of the roast.
And it was 'dirt cheap'!
It also 'fueled' me through 1am truck unloading shifts, then home for a pot of fresh coffee & homework til 3-4am, and off to school at 7 (another pot).
No wonder I got good grades - strictly a coffee high.
Also where I learned about grinding it at home, filter papers, and pour overs - and was considered really weird for it (home grinders didn't become common until the pretty little Braun units in the 70s - still have one of those!
Now I have a closet full of old coffee makers that didn't quite make the cut.
Recently got very lucky that a local roasting company opened a cafe a block from me, so now get beans fresh roasted whenever I need 'em, and priced about the same as grocery store brands (even less with the 10% discount you get for buying and bringing one of their canisters for 'refills').
Yum.
Good lord, just saw this thing:

(Full disclosure: I have the 'chemistry set' version.)
Ok, fueled up now - back to 'work n' play'!
:jump:

I've tried a junkyard full of coffee makers.
I firmly believe the best cup comes from a French press.
The two piece stove top espresso makers are also hard to beat.

I have a mutli hundred dollar automatic espresso maker too. It grinds the beans, brews the cup, then automatically dumps the grounds into a hopper.
It's rather schpiffy.

But anymore, if it doesn't have an auto timer, forget it!
I need that first cup waiting for me when I crawl out of bed.
The second pot I have more patience for, and might go with the press.

The sad thing is just about every toaster and auto-drip coffee maker I buy usually has to be thrown out every year and replaced.

I feel your pain lol. My most recent has been with us for about 2yrs and still working ok, it's a Mr Coffee.

I used one of those Braun blade grinders for yrs but changed to a burr grinder and the grind is waaaaay more consistent.

My current maker is a Krups 12 cup drip. (it's my second in 2 years)
The damnedest thing....for as long as digital clocks have been around, these things lose about five minutes a day.
It's not that big of a deal, except for that one day a week when my wife works her "Fun money" job.
If I forget to unplug and reset the clock the night before, coffee is half an hour late.
