Coleman Hawkins - Night Hawk - 2 Versions?

hi*ball

Records & Coffee
I have seen 2 different album sleeves for this album and I also noticed that the older version has 5 tracks, while the newer has 6 tracks.

Does anyone know if there is any difference to the recording of the 5 songs common to both records? :music:

Interesting.

This is the one I have (I posted it yesterday in Jazz Playlist);

It has five cuts.

Is this the one you speak of that has Six Cuts?

That is the one (on the bottom). I'm hesitant to buy it online without being able to hear it.

The closest I could come online is via Xbox Music (free on your laptop or desktop) or Amazon MP3.
They have a combined new "Night Hawk" and "Very Saxy" you can listen to.
I'd think that this version of "Night HAWK" is the same as the newer version album since it is MP3.

Sorry I could not help you out more. I'm happy with my copy. Did not know the newer version had another cut added.

I've got the second copy (bottom picture), with the extra recording of "Lover".

The sound quality of the album is great, and so is the music.

I've never heard the first release. If you're debating getting the two, I'd say get the second one, because the "Lover" track is kickin'!! :music: If there is anyone out there who has both and says the sound quality of the five track is better, I would say that the sound quality is still great on the six track, plus you've got the extra great track.

Thanks for the info. Just placed the order (for the second one pictured). $16 with shipping for a NM copy.

I will!

Since I purchased Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster, I've been looking for more Coleman Hawkins. Really like him.

Well, you have great taste in music, that's all I gotta say!!

If you ever want to get some really great Hawk albums, check out "Today and Now" and "Desafinado" on Impulse. If you can get original copies of that, the sound quality is amazing. I've also got a double LP Prestige reissue called "The Real Thing" which combines original Hawkins recordings from 3 Prestige albums called "Coleman Hawkins Soul", "Coleman Hawkins Plus the Red Garland Trio", and "At Ease With Coleman Hawkins". Great stuff, but you will get a couple more songs if you get the original records. I've got to get those originals someday just to get those songs. Garland of course, Tommy Flanagan, and Ray Bryant are the pianists on these cuts. Tommy Flanagan was Hawk's favorite piano player.

If you like these kind of tenor players, also check out Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, Budd Johnson, and Don Byas too.

I will!

Thanks! I've recently been trying to widen out in my jazz listening, and Coleman Hawkins was one of those that I stumbled onto. I guess I lean toward "hard bop".

I really like The Hawk Flies High.
Bonus points for it having JJ Johnson on it, and being produced by Orrin Keepnews.

Well done, you have stumbled onto a great reissue. They reissued the entire Swingville catalogue under this series and its the most economic way to own vinyl culled from the master tapes. As far as owning an original issue, the cost would be very prohibitive. Hawkins had 6 albums on Swingville and they are all worthy.

I also want to add that the Hawk is not just another player, he was THE player. Many credit him as the godfather of modern sax. There's no end to the great albums released under his name. Enjoy!!
