Collector donates 700 Civil War photos to Library of Congress

There were plenty of "soldiers" in the 11-12-13 year old range by the end of the war. Many were drummers, but there were sure some carrying rifles. I distinctly remember when the last few Civil War veterans died in the early 1960's.
 
I remember going to Harlow Mapes Day celebration at McCallie, where we went to Chattanooga-Chickamauga Battlefield in the spring, flew kites, had burgers, made a day of it. It was so incredibly beautiful there, hard to believe that 95 years before, guys my age at the time & a little older were shooting at each other there...I didn't/don't really hate ANYBODY bad enuff to go shootin' at him...

What's interesting, Sandy, is that a number of folks born and raised in Western states have little idea of the Civil War, particularly the degree of carnage involved. I'm sort of a Civil War buff and when colleagues from the West come to town on business, I convince them to take a day off and visit Antietam or Gettysburg. They leave with a new found appreciation of the war - an amazing time in American history.
