Column II Tweeters

Hi all,

I picked up a pair of Infinity Column II a few months ago for only $75 off CL :) The seller dropped one of the grills while getting ready to demo them for me, and it promptly broke into four pieces. But with some patience, and several different stages of gluing and clamping, I got it back together fairly square.

Anyway, I realized after-the-fact that the front tweeters on both speakers are replacements - compression horns, no less. The back tweeters are the original piezos, although one of them has been pushed in a bit - it does still work, though. So I'm wanting to replace at least the two front tweeters, and looking for suggestions.

Should I hunt for original piezos? Does anyone know if Infinity still has them in stock?
Or should I just go ahead and replace all four tweeters with something different? I'm thinking that all four should match in any event in order to get a balanced sound.

I'm far from an expert on these, but I don't think I've ever seen the tweeters available anywhere. I sincerely doubt Infinity has them; they can't even support stuff from the 1990s.

If it was me, I'd swap the front and back tweeters (I assume they're the same?) until I could find the appropriate replacements.

Now, having said that, it's probable that the tweeters were manufactured for Infinity by another manufacturer. If you can figure out who that was, maybe you can find a similar model of the same vintage. There weren't many different manufacturers of piezo tweeters.
 
Thanks for your reply. I contacted Infinity HK just for grins, and of course they don't have any replacements.

I read some mention of Motorola and the piezos...will have to check further.
 
Motorola was (is?) probably the largest manufacturer of piezos. It's possible (probable, even) that they made the same tweeter with several different faceplates. Check out Radio Shack model 40-1380 as an example of a Motorola piezo in a different shape.
 
the tweeters used in the column II were motorola piezoelectrics, and front and rear tweeters were interchangeable. infinity claimed the tweets were "specially modified, and hand treated," but what this treatment involved is unclear (there are no visible signs of mods to the tweets, but they do sound unusually good for piezos). column ii original tweeters do come up on ebay periodically, just be patient.
