Comments on Sennheiser headphones with aluminum voice coils please

I am looking for headphones to use with a sim rig. The ones I am looking at are probably of higher SQ than needed for sim racing but I am like that.

I started my search with Sennheiser as I am quite familiar with them. I have a pair of HD 380 Pros which I use when I am on the training bike with a Surface Pro7i to watch IndyCar racing or whatever and a pair of HD 800's I used with a Brooklyn DAC when I was on the road doing engineering consulting.

Back to the search. I was thinking open back. As much to try a new style as to have some awareness of when might be going on in the room. Sennheiser has a range of headphones in there 5XX and 6XX series that look like possibles. Several of them have the ability to support a mic which might come in handy so I would like to select one of them.

My hesitation is the aluminum voice coils. I am averse to aluminum wire from my experience with cables used for aircraft. They are lighter, which is why airframers use them, but they have higher (and strange) impedance characteristics. They have more resistance and impedance which results in more losses which results in heating and would seem not to be a good choice for high(er) end audio. They also are much more likely to corrode. Aluminum corrodes almost instantly when exposed to air.

That being said, Sennheiser has been making moderate to excellent headphones for a long time. Do they really have it figured out?

*Bare* aluminum corrodes (and so does bare copper). By definition, a voice coil, no matter the metal, cannot be bare. An advantage to aluminum is lower mass - IE better freq response since lighter. Sennheiser is a good brand - I wouldn't worry.
