Community mailbox

I'm just starting to move into my new place after the foreclosure, and I just noticed that no one in the neighborhood has a mailbox. There appear to be several of those bulk community mailboxes located throughout the neighborhood instead of individual mailboxes at each house. I'm NOT at all happy about this, and I wouldn't have signed the lease if I had noticed it. With the price of gas I don't need to have to drive to get my mail. Does anyone know what the post office rules about mailboxes are? If a neighborhood has these bulk mailboxes, do you have to use them? If you put up a normal mailbox, will they just ignore it?

My last neighborhood had those. Didn't mind, nice daily walk for the dog. The USPS controls those (thats who you get the keys from), so I don't think there is any chance of another option.

Your stuck, buy a bicycle to ride down there.

Its not that big of a deal, you will get in the habit of grabbing the mail on the way home. I had one at an old rental, wasn't a problem after adjusting.

I work from home, so there's no picking it up on my way home. I've also gotten in the habit of giving a bunch of packages to the mailman when I see him outside. It's also handy to be able to process received payments immediately so I can ship things the same day.

I receive a lot of packages for my business. What happens with those? Do they make a special trip to your house, or will I have to go to the post office? I guess at least it's only for a year...

Andy, it depends on where you live exactly and how lazy your postman is.

Might wanna catch them one day and ask. Maybe a batch of cookies or something will entice them to stop by for you.

The postman should bring the larger packages to your home, the smaller ones will be left in the large door bulk mail slots. Most of the mailmen if you catch them at some point and tell them you would like all your bulk packages delivered to your house don`t mind, but there`s always the 1 A~~hole who won`t. Oh ya be NICE!!!

Andy;

You should go to the Post Office covering your neighborhood. They should be able to explain how your central point delivery box works. I think several of us could use the walk to the mailbox beginning with me, myself and I.

On the shipping side there is a link on their website home page for residential pickup http://www.usps.com/ . I did ask our postal guru about the residential pickup. She told me that when you make the online pickup request they HAVE to pickup the package. If the carrier doesn't, they HAVE to return to your house and pickup up the package to clear it out of the computer and thus be able to finish work for the day. Of course this is all based on the carrier receiving the request before they begin deliveries that day. So shipping shouldn't be a problem.

I once lived in an apartment complex that had those damn things and hated it. The idiotic postmen mis-threw mail on a daily basis. Luckily, most of the other renters were honest enough to exchange mail. Also, unlike old fashioned mailboxes, they leaked. If it was raining or snowing, you could count on having your mail ruined.
