Compact Amplifier Recommendations

I have an application for a compact amplifier. I’m considering the Carver M-400 amplifier due to it’s compact size and 201 watt per channel rating.

Im looking for recommendations on other available modern compact power amplifiers. My space constraints dictate a maximum amplifier chassis of 12”L x 12”W x 12”H and a minimum of 100 watts per channel.

Budget maximum: $1,000.

I'd hardly consider the carver a "modern" amp since it came out in about 1980. Others from around the same time are the Adcom GFA-1 and the Soundcraftsmen PCR800.

OK, was a little confused by your OP. You're basically talking about current models, then, which is going go severely limit your selection.

If the 12" isn't a hard limit, there's the Schitt Vidar which is 13" deep and 100 watts/channel.

The PS Audio Sprout is 100 watts into 4Ω (but only 50 watts into 8Ω). This is an integrated amp, not a power amp.

But two of them bridged would give 90 watts/channel into 8Ω, which might be enough for the OP. And a pair would still be well under the OP's budget.

and go toe to toe with traditional class AB amps.

No need to buy some old used amp with your budget and requirements.

Yup.

The manufacturer is even an active member over at audiosciencereview. It was fun to see him help troubleshoot / repair folks who bought other cheap class D amps that were poorly designed. Seems like a knowledgeable and nice guy.

Class D amps have a small footprint and come with tons of choices.

Some of the older Fisher Studio Standard amps have excellent build quality and really kick butt. About 15 inches wide though.

I concur with trying a Hypex amp using their NC252MP module for about 200 watts/channel. I use one using the more powerful NC502MP module in the garage system.

Compact with fabulous midrange transparency. High end response is somewhat compromised as is the case with all switchers I've heard vs better AB amps, but is overall very good. Advise using shielded power cord.
