Comparing KLH to Dynaco?

Just curious,

for those that have heard both, how would you compare the Dynaco 25s to the KLH 6 or 17s? Or... is a KLH 23 or other model KLH a better comparison?

I own the much newer Kloss model 6s and 17s from Cambridge Soundworks. Very good speakers in my opinion, but I doubt they replicate exactly what his earlier KLH model 6s and 17s sound like.

THAT would be a nice comparison. Let's see if I ever get any of those old KLHs...

The KLH 17's & Dynaco A 25's would be excellent to test side by side..., and since I'm lucky enough to have both I think that I'll do that this evening. Compairing a Dynaco A 25 to the KLH 6 would not really be a fair comparison simply due to box size. There is another thread discussing the merits/differences of the 17's & 6's and I would think that the same rules apply. I'll post my thoughts on the 17/25 comparison later on today or tomorrow.

Must be a little Karmic serendipity going on... I just did this the other night. I have an almost NOS quality pair of KLH 17's and a comparable pair of Dynaco A-25's. A friend of mine is putting together his first real HI-Fi setup and I, having way too much gear, told him I would help him out. I let him loose on my collection of speakers and let him choose. We spent two hours listening to the 17's and A-25's through my 1959 H/K TA-230 and a tweaked Denon 2910. He ended up buying the Dynaco's to go with an H.H. Scott integrated with 7591's. Here are my observations.

KLH-17's They like to go deep. I don't think they go lower than the Dynaco's, it's just presented different, more emphasis. Very nice high end detail, smooth, never harsh. Mid range was a little recessed compared to the Dynaco's. Wide soundstage and good imaging.

Dynaco A-25's A little tighter and better definition on the bottom but doesn't have the impact of the 17's. Very smooth and refined high end. A little lacking above 17,000hz but still manages to present a nice airyness. Magic midrange! Very clean and balanced. A little more forward than the 17's but very natural sounding. Wide soundstage and very good imaging.

Overall they are both very good speakers and you could easily live with either and not be missing much. For Jazz, Blues, Classical, Acoustic..the Dynaco's have the edge. For rockin' out or Trance, Dance...the 17's had more impact. They both can handle a ridiculous amount of power for vintage speakers. You could easily use either with a good SS receiver with no worries. To my ears though they are at their best with tubes.

He ended up taking the Dynaco's...good choice!...I'm just glad I had hid the two pairs of horns I picked up recently. :D

I have both KLH 17's and Dynaco A-25's and have done some cursory comparisons. The results suggest that my KLH's are sick. I much prefer the Dynacos to the KLH 17's, but the 17's may be in need of a recap.

I have both the A-25's and KLH 6's stacked. Both are great speakers and I've yet to pick a favorite. IMHO, the stacked pairs sound better than either speaker by itself. - Mark

Cableguy, did you do your comparison? I'd love to hear what you have to say about this post. I respect your opinion on hifi matters. :thmbsp:

My KLH 17's have found a new home also... :tears: Naw, it's all good. My mom's business partner moved last week and his new abode is friendly to serious listening. :music: He's been using a high end H/K AV receiver with a CV home theater setup but after hearing my gear that wasn't cutting it anymore. While I still think that the Dynaco's are excellent little speakers I was very impressed with how good the 17's sound in his setup. They work better in his rig than they ever did with any of my gear. :thmbsp: That's the fun of this hobby. I was happy to see them go to where they will be appreciated, plus I need the room for my new projects. I'll be posting pics and write ups over the next few days of my modded Sherwood 8's (they won't handle the power a 25 will, but they will hold their own soundwise) I will finish today and two very funky pairs of Magnavox horn cabinets that are on a different level than the console systems everyone is familiar with. (Poor man's Heresy's anyone? :D )
