Compatibility of turntable and receiver

I bought a Yamaha turntable, model YP-D6, back in 1979. I also bought a Yamaha receiver at the same time, model CR820. I upgraded my receiver to the Yamaha HTR5650 probably twelve years ago and found the turntable was incompatible with the new digital receiver, so have been unable to use the turntable since. Is there any kind of adapter that is available that will enable the turntable to be usable through the newer receiver? It's a great turntable and have so many albums that I haven't been able to listen to in years.

Phono preamp

ArtDJ and Emotiva both make simple units that retail for less than $150, there are also many others that will get recommended as this thread grows.
