Component out problem with mvp-841

i've owned the 841 since 2001. on some dvd's the picture would turn black and i would get a message from the tv "no signal."
this would be intermittent and doesn't happen on all dvd's. many play thru without any black-outs.
this only happens using the component outputs.
when using the s-video output, there is never a problem.

has anyone experienced this or have any ideas?

If the component video is not hooked up directly to the TV I would try this to remove your A/V front end from the chain. In any case I believe you are losing green and therefore the sync signal

thanks for the quick response.
the 841 is directly hooked to the tv.
this "losing green" would be caused by what? a bad connection? i've checke the connections and they seem to be tight.
and like i mentioned earlier, many of the dvd's i play on it thru component out, play perfectly fine.
the 841 was mac's 1st player w/ component outs and i purchased it as soon as it was available.
i wonder if there has been any upgrades since than?

General things to check before going to the service guy....

Big cable plugs over the years have played havoc with RCA plug solder connections to circuit boards on TVs so try a different component input.

Sure it could be a cable so use the green cable for red and red for green and see if you lose red intermitently but most likely is video amp in DVD player.

No green means you are losing connection on one of the three component cables or they are not connected in the correct sequence at either the player or video display end.

Thanks again,
Ron-C

again, i appreciate the feedback.
i'm confused concerning the 'NO GREEN' issue or a bad video amp.
why do more than half of the discs play fine?
wouldn't the above issues cause all the discs to play intermittently?

anyways, worst case is i play it with the s-video outs; there doesn't seem to be too much difference in picture quality between the two.

You can plug and unplug the component cables one at a time, with DVD selected and see if you are getting a feed from each one. The DVD blue screen is fine to use for this as a picture source.

Thanks,
Ron-C

So far we are looking for connection issues with the green signal cable which also carries the sync signal that keeps the DVD picture in time with the TV picture. . That signal when cut will cause the TV to lose the display.

Are you saying the same discs always lose picture when played via component but still function via S video?
