Computer CD-R Drive Differences

I have a few computers here that I occasionally burn mix CD's on. Some discs have lasted over 20 years while some less than a year. I originally thought it was different quality blanks, however, after switching things up a bit it seems to be an issue with the drives. Is there a "better" brand of drive or is it hit or miss? I had thought that any of the name brand drives would do a good job but is this not true? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I usually do wav files but whatever it is I always use a slower burn rate on the 'just because' thought.

I use wav files also and I usually burn close to slow but not the slowest.
I was told many years ago if you go too slow on a stronger drive you can create errors from the excess heat.
I don't know if this is valid or not?

I do a middle speed also. Just something about the way I think about using a machine... any machine unless the situation dictates otherwise.

I rarely burn discs anymore, but that's how I do it also. They have always worked, until the disc rot sets in or they get damaged.

Cw: There certainly are better and not so great drives. But when my friend and fellow editor Georg did a pretty huge comparative review of blanks with several different drives almost 20 years ago, irrc the result also was, that different good drives would not all also work best with the same types of good blanks. So good results also appear a question of finding the ideal drive/blank combinations.

I have a Marantz CDR633 cd recorder and several years ago it began to intermittently fail during the recording process. I was told that the manufacturers of blank cd’s had mostly changed their chemical composition and that was not an unusual problem. They suggested using high quality discs. I started using Taiyo Yuden discs and have not had a single failure since.
