Concept 16.5 at that auction site

I'm still waiting on a Kenwood 700M/C, or perhaps, a Luxman M-6000, or maye an Accuphase P-600. Or maybe a Yamaha MX-2000...wait, I have that already..It's all about preference. I'm sure this concept will go for its market value. It will be interesting to watch. Hopefully it won't end up shilled to death. I wish SoCal Sam the best and hope he gets it at a good price.

...remember the time(not too long ago) when a negative report appeared about it, and the wagons immediately formed a circle?...
The 16.5 is by no means perfect. The lack of inputs and in particular an AUX input is maddening. And, your dislike of the phono stage is well known. Despite these weaknesses, the 16.5 is well liked here and that is why I bought one. Mine has a bad tuner that I knew about and I bargained the price down for. I have not read about other 16.5 owners with tuner problems. Anyways, I'd like to have a spare.

Thanks rhioki. No, I'm not going to bid over the market rate. Some gear is worth the market rate and others are not. IMO, the 16.5 is worth it.

Your shopping list is excellent. I have a 700M/C and a P-300.

Actually, it's not about "dislike", I was simply reporting in with factual experiences. And, like you, "the 16.5 is well liked here and that is why I bought one"

I followed your thread on the 16.5 phono stage and I respect you for sticking to your guns. However, I would like to point out plenty of others chimed in positively.

I used to own Concept 6.5, 5.5, 11.0 and I know them so well. Currently I have a 12.0D. To tell the truth they all sound bad and all have reliability issues. I don't expect these 25+ year old gears to last but they ALL had either bad relays, one bad channel, another weak channel, etc that I stopped looking for them unless they are being offered like 10 buck ea. yes I had my 12D for $10. Their reliability is really questionable. Somebody may love them but I don't. The 12D is no comparision to the SX1050 which has less power. So I don't expect to see the 16.5 to be as good as many said. My 2 cents.

Thats quite an opinion!!:yikes: My Concept 16.5 blows away my Pioneer SX-939 10 to 1 sound quality wise, IMO. And the 939 is by no means a bad receveir. I dont know anyone here who has had any reliability probs with a 16.5. A couple people found minor problems when they came(used off eBay), but all easily fixable. No flame here, also, just my opinion.

I really bet the one on eBay now will go high, with all the hype lately. 5 days left and its already $30 more than my Concept was when I won the bidding on it 2 months ago. Mine was $450. I think I got a good deal. If I didnt have one yet and I was bidding on the one now, I would go up to $600, but no more. I bet this one will go past $800.

You never know how many of anything ended up in a dumpster because someone had problems. There is always a "cream of the crop" of any run of electronics. Models that had a bad batch run and then good ones. Still happens today. I've been an electronics rep for the last 6 years and in A/V retail since 1982. Maybe I haven't been in this business as long as others of you, but it's electronics....it's not a matter of if it's going to fail; it's a matter of when. Some work, some don't. Some people like a particular model of something to their ears and taste, others don't. It's what makes us human. It would be the same thing as me saying I like the way my Carver M1.0t, Counterpoint amp, McIntosh amp, or any other sounds versus the other. Be it, the Carver sounds (to me) better than any of my vintage stuff I've had or have (as far as musicality goes) but that's just me....and only me.

I like all of this stuff. I'm not out to badger anyones gear. I would own one of everything if I had the space and money!

Sound is very subjective and we all know that. So my opinions about the Concept's and their sound should be considered with a grain of salt. Looks in general is probably more objective. I like the Concept plain Jane kind of looks. But the sound oh :nono:

It is rediculous to pay >$800 for this receiver. Save your money and buy a used Pioneer Spec or a McIntosh amp or heck a Phase Linear 400/4000 combo with 5000 as FM tuner will eat this receiver for lunch.
