cone to dome tweeter upgrade????

I have 2 pairs of Radio Shack Nova 6 speakers that I have been thinking about putting new dome tweets and crossovers in. As luck would have it some weekend dumpster diving netted me 4 dome tweeters from some Leslie DVX speakers that someone trashed.

The old cone tweets are 6.9 ohm and the dome tweeters from the Leslies are 9.1 ohms. So am I correct in thinking that they both are nominal 8ohms with a load on them. The specs for drivers that I am familiar with are 4,8 or 16 and never oddball numbers like 7 or 9.

Can I use these with an off the shelve 2way crossover from Parts Express?

Thanks.

Where are they crossed at? If it's low (1800 to 2200Hz) many dome tweeters won't go that low leaving a gap in the response and will get damaged if crossed that low. Your 6.9 reading is the DCR...the impedance is probably 8 ohms.

The problem with the off the shelf crossovers is that they don't have any L-pads on them to match the driver output levels. It is unlikely that you can throw in some random tweeter into your speaker and have the output level match your woofer. Also it is unknown what a safe x-over freq is for the tweeter.

Perhaps if you put up some photos somebody will recognize them and you can find out more technical details about the tweeters.

generic xover will work, you need to make your own Lpad. or you could add in the cost of an adjustable Lpad from PE. most domes are good to 2500hz, some might need 3500 hz. this usually means that the mid or woofer needs to be able to play up into that range.

AS woofers from the vintage era usually can unless they are big 12" or 15".

if there is a midrange then cross from that.

if this a garage speaker than have fun, but if not then research more what you want to do.

cheap drivers usually mean cheap sound though a good xover can improve things. if this is a small budget project then you will have to experiment.
