Conflicting info: Marantz 2270 and AR3A's

EPI and JBL are like apples and oranges to me, YMMV.

Here are some more options I just dug up:

Advent NLAs for $150

Morel Renaissance MLP-403 $300

Allison CD-7 $150

ADS L1090 $400

Dahlquist DQ-20i with manuals $500

AR11b $400 <--- I would go with these if you are an AR fanatic.

There's a couple Dahlquist DQ-10s and some more modern stuff that's pretty nice. There's a set of Usher tower speakers too.
 
Besides the KLH Five, the Twenty Three is a fantastic two way speaker which has the same woofer as the Five, and as stated earlier, you can't go wrong with ADS's, also outstanding speakers!
 
Buy the ADS L 810's. You won't be sorry. Back in the day they were often paired with receivers in the 60-100 wpc. I bought mine in 1981 and used them with my Sony Str 7065 for several years.

Or the 1090's. They've been up for months, maybe the seller is ready to deal.
robertv: Don't worry about ohm ratings on speakers. It's "Nominal Impedance" and nominal means "in name only" which means is doesn't mean much at all. That receiver can do a good job with most speakers.

I don't really have a whole lot of experience with JBL, but I have one pair of EPI and one Genesis and they are both significantly brighter than all the other speakers I have (KLH, Energy, Rectilinear) so based on the OP's stated preference for East Coast speakers I was just thinking that they might warrant a critical listen before diving in. there is a lot to like about them though; I'm definitely not implying that they are bad (or that JBLs are either, for that matter.)
 
I say if you like the way the AR 3a's sound, then set that as your goal. Just started on a set today and can't wait to here them. Right now I am listening to a pair of KLH Model 5's hooked up to a Marantz 2270. These sound awesome. They are sitting on a pair of 2ax's I have restored. When the AR3's are done I want to A-B them to the Model 5's.

Watching a pair of AR 6's close to me. Supposedly woofers re-foamed last year. Dang it just bought 2 pairs of Sansui AP-2000's and a pair of SP-3000's with an AV Sony receiver for $250.00. I should flip one pair of the SP-2000's plus the receiver and give this person an offer. I you-tubed for Ar-6 and like what I hear though the headphones. They may be worth hearing the Wife's lips flapping about how much of an idiot I am. :blah:

Yes, 4 ohm, they like a powerful amplifier to sound their best. I did a comparison between my AR collection and found the 11's to be the best all around sounding. I liked the early AR-3a bass the best though, they had the alnico woofers.
 
Your receiver will do fine with the 4ohm speakers as long as volume is not turned up past 30-40 watts. I have a Sansui G-8000 that ran some 3a's fine until I hit around 50 watts with deep bass music...and it would shut it down.

Posters here recco'd 5's but why not go newer and look for some AR12's? They are an updated version of the 5's and the midrange is just awesome. Better bass than 5's also. They are 8ohm and I can't begin to tell ya how good they sound. Rare and hard to find but a jewel if you find them.
 
Well, if anyone is still following this thread, here's what I ended up doing: I decided that the consensus seemed to indicate that AR3A's would not be a good match. Based on the advice I got here, I narrowed my search down to the AR5 and the ADS L810. Couldn't find AR5's anywhere, but last Sunday I found a pair of L810's on that auction site for $100. They were that cheap because someone spray painted them white... not just the cabinets but also the metal grills. So they look like crap, but I can fix that.

They arrived today, and at first I thought that they not only looked like crap but sounded like it too. Luckily, though, I had read a couple of threads on here that warned me about blown tweeter fuses. Popped off the back panel and both spare fuses were still there. I exchanged them, and I've spent the rest of the evening loving these speakers. No, they don't quite have the bass of the AR3A, but there is PLENTY, and they just sound so natural, so comfortable. There's a smooth sweetness to the mids and the highs. I'd been listening for three hours when my wife told me she was going to bed, so I've had to shut down for the night.

Needless to say, I'm very satisfied. Thanks again to all for your comments and advice.

You did good, I had a similar experience with some ADS 1230's I picked up for a song, all it took was a couple fuses and they sounded super. Once you get them looking good post some before and after pictures. :thumbsup:

As I've been actually thinking about looking into hearing aids due to HF loss and a bunch of chronic tinnitus hence the change in my avatar. I'm pretty sure it was the "west coast" in your face speakers (L100's) back at the dorm that began the loss and the laid back "East Coast" sound that has made this hobby enjoyable for me. Congrats on the L810's. Looking forward to pics and the ensuing transformation.
