Connecting speakers to Hitachi SR-604... options other than bare wire?

Apologies for the newbie question - I have a Hitachi SR-604 which I'm rather attached to but it has annoying binding posts (attached photo I found) which I've only been able to use bare speaker wire with, and with difficulty every time. I ordered some spade to banana adapter plugs but the spades are too large to fit in the gap and I couldn't locate any smaller ones. Not could I find a way too remove the plastic caps - they won't unscrew completely and I applied some force but was afraid of damaging them. Can anyone advise on the best solution - I'm just trying to tidy things up and get decent sound. Thanks very much!

With a soldering iron and some solder, I usually tin about a 1/2 inch of the end of the wire.

I can't be sure from the picture but it looks like banana plugs might fit into them.

You can trim down the spade connectors. Use a large wire cutter or a dremel grinding wheel.
