Getting off topic here from the 400A, but... what annoyances are you alluding to? You've piqued my curiousity about preamps now...You've got a good reference point at least. The newer ones will likely have more clarity, although that can sometime come at the expense of other annoyances.
By vintage solid state standards its probably a very good one. I've never heard one. I've had one sitting waiting for repair for a year, but I'm in no hurry to hear it.
Preamps have come a long way since the 70's. Things started getting really good at the end of the 80's. You are likely going to hear a much bigger sonic gain playing around with preamps.
Has your preamp been recapped?
It´s only one way to find out - arrange a side by side comparison.
Recapping the pre would be the cheapest thing you can do to make a big improvement. Whether you change anything else or not,...recapping the pre is a must.
Hope they replaced them with something of quality....
