Contact Cleaner

I have been using Deoxit for all of my contact, switch and control cleaning needs, but I recently came across another product the maintenance guys at my work use for contact cleaning on all of our robotics, PLCs and even welders. CRC Contact Cleaner 2000 VC. Our shop is closing and I have an opportunity to bring home some of this CRC stuff. These are 16 oz cans, they retail for about $45. Is anyone famuiliar with this stuff? How does it compare to Deoxit?

The CRC leaves no residue. It is a strong solvent degreaser like brake cleaner used in automotive work. Deoxit does leave a protective residue which you want there. They serve different purposes. I would use the CRC for general grunge removal and flushing out dirt. I use the regular D5 Deoxit for switches and Faderlube for pots. You could possibly use the CRC to flush out any contaminants before Deoxit-ing.

I don't mean to highjack, but I've been wondering the same thing. I've been using Dylek NF for cleaning and have CRC 2-26, which is plastic safe, for lubing. Then if I really need some thicker lube I use CRC Di-electric grease. I've heard about Deox all over the internet as being the best. So I finally bought some at Radio Shack, it was like $14 for a tiny can that lasted about ten seconds of spray time, not really interested in buying that again...unless I can find it for a better price and a way bigger can.

If you bought the Deoxit at Radio Shack, it was probably the twin pack of Deoxit DN5 and Gold GN5 which are about 14 grams each. The N versions are quick evaporating and do not have flushing action. The breath spray toy versions are labeled for Connector cleaning.

The real Deoxit D5 and Faderlube F5 have flushing action and 10 times more product in a 5 oz (142 grams) spray can. I can find these locally at a Fry's of Guitar Center. You can get them online at Guitar Center site.

CRC makes more than one kind of contact cleaner, as does Deoxit. CRC "QD Electronic Contact Cleaner," unlike the other material described by someone, is "plastic safe" and "residue free," but I don't think it dissolves corrosion nearly to the degree that Deoxit "5D" spray with "flushing action" does. I have used them in that order on controls and switches and gotten a significant amount of more dirt and crud out with the second application (D5). The D5 includes some kind of protectant, but not as much as some other DEoxit produicts.

I used Electro-Sound Guitar Pickup and Electronic Cleaner. It was a little over $12 from Ebay for a small can. Used it to clean the pots on my NAD 7140. It worked well and evaporated quickly. Not sure if it has any lubricating properties or not but it did the job and the volume pot is no longer scratchy. So if I want some more of that stuff I may have to go to my local Guitar Center. There is also an electronics store here in town that I'm sure would have some good stuff. Too bad that I wasted a half of a can of that Electro Sound stuff on an MXR EQ that ended up in the dumpster.
