Convert LP to digital

This is probably a stupid question but I need to know before I go spend money on something I don't need.
I have a Rega RP8 and a Rega DAC-R. I want to digitize some vinyl. Is there anyway I can use the turntable through the DAC to get it to the computer. My original plan is to buy a Rega Fono Mini but if there is a way I can do it through my DAC it could save me some money.

No! Because you have a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) You have to go the other way ADC Analog to Digital Converter.

I read about this occasionally here on AK... about converting analog vinyl to digital zeros and ones.

A question: Many people like the analog sound over the digital sound. But if one converts vinyl recordings to digital, is the analog sound gone? If that's an ignorant question, so be it. But I am curious about this.

hn53: As usual in hifi there'll be different opinions on that. So in the end you'll always have to try yourself.

However, personally I'm in the camp that thinks that, provided it's done right and with reasonably good equipment, the conversion to digital and back to analogue is pretty transparent/neutral. However, I also belong to the camp that doesn't deem analogue as superior by principle, but that it rather foremost depends on the mastering...

The ADC's are really, really important. Otherwise your vinyl archive will sound lifeless.

For example: I am using an E-MU 1820M card that has one of the best ADC chips out there, AKM AK5394 (on line inputs it has THD+N -110dB).

In my experience, the vinyl that I have converted to digital sounds like vinyl...complete with the popping! I am sure some vinyl purists will disagree, but I am happy with the sound and love the convenience of digital.

Short answer: No, the analog sound isn't gone. I do a lot of archiving and restoration. Every source defect is recorded faithfully.
