Convince me not to buy two sets of Acoustic Research speakers 2a and 4x

Alright. A pair of AR 2A's and a pair of AR 4x's for $185 or a little less. Tell me not to buy them. I bought my pair of AR 2ax's for $5. The resell value on ebay is what.. $100 each?

If you dare to buy those ARs,a gang of outlaw bikers will come around and take turns committing unnatural, unspeakable acts on you. :tears:  :thumbsdn: :smoke:

How's that? :scratch2:

Okay, here goes.

1. I'm assuming you already have at least a few other pairs of speakers. Instead of buying another pair, try to relax and enjoy the ones you already have.

2. If you have a wife who insists you already have enough stuff, remember: family first, speakers second.

3. Be lazy! Do you really want to have to get up from your comfy chair, go in a car, turn the car on, drive all the way to where the speakers are, turn the car off, get out of the car, load speakers (which may be heavy) into a car, turn the car on, drive all the way home, and unload the speakers? That's a lot of effort.

3b. Think about the environment! If you drive to get the speakers, you're polluting the environment slightly.

3c. If you don't drive, you'll have to walk. Again with reason 3a, only more so.

4. If reason 2 is true, your wife may be so upset about the mountain of speakers in your house, she may throw away a pair of speakers without telling you. So now, by buying speakers, you'll actually have less speakers.

5. The country is in a recession. Instead of spending the money on yourself, treat a hobo to a hamburger and milkshake at McDonalds.

6. How do you know you're only buying those speakers? Maybe the seller recently "upgraded" to a Bose or Walmart speaker system and will make you listen to the system when you come to visit. If you're buying them from a store, maybe someone will try to rob the store while you're there and then you'll have to take time out of your busy schedule to serve as a witness at the police station.

7. There are many other nice people at AudioKarma who would like to have those speakers. So let someone else find a good audio deal this time.

8. For every good deal you get on a speaker system, 17 more people buy Bose.

9. The speakers are infected with deadly bacteria for which scientists have not yet found a cure.
9b. The bacteria multiply every time music is played through the speakers.

How's that for reasons?

AR's usually need a rebuilt of the x-overs and l-pads. To my ears, they sound dull and bright at the same time. Cheap paper tweeters are the culprits.

Don't come to AK looking for reasons NOT to get something. Especially something good like ARs. Go get 'em! We're all addicts, ya know?

You don't want an answer from me, obviously. :thumbsdn:

[That's about $150 too much.... ]

If you need to be "convinced" not to buy them, you already know that you want them.

If this is a hobby for you and not a business, resale value is irrelevant.

If there was someone making decent hifi speakers in the US that you could buy for the same price, one reason might be that buying new would help keep someone employed and boost the economy, but we all know we can pretty much cross that one off the list, yes?

So these are the potential reasons not to buy what you want:

1. You can't afford them
2. You can get them for less somewhere else
3. Your wife will refuse to have sex with you if you bring them into the house

None of these apply to you? Go get what you want.

Pass. You already have a pair of the superior AR-2ax and it's not what you'd call a scorching deal.

I can see paying good money for AR's 2-series or 4-series, but only if the necessary restoration work has already been done.

Scored a pair of AR3as for $10 today.

Another guy beat me to the AR2axs for $25.

[Brace yourselves.... ]

Hey Moss Man,

If you still need some convincing maybe this will help to get you over your affliction.

I'd hold out for a better deal to come along if you really want them.

I once wanted a pair of AR's but knowing they need work to bring them up to snuff I'll wait for a ten or twenty dollar pair to surface.

Hey, if the tweeters work and you're going to dispose of them to econowave the box...

I'll try:

I have a pair of AR-4x. They're currently in storage, holding up a pile of other speakers I don't run anymore. I like the AR-3a well enough but the 4x I have, and the 2as that I've heard, were not, to my ears, great speakers. It stands to reason, in my opinion, that there wouldn't be an AR-2ax if the AR-2a was entirely successful.

So, did you get em yet?
