Prior to Linkwitz, Thiel and Small a lot was guess work, Yankee ingenuity and sometimes just dumb luck. Of course the greatest debt of gratitude belongs to Edison for his insane idea of "recording" sounds. What a nut job eh? Thank goodness for us.

I'll definitely check out the article, interviews are fun. There are some for Thiel and Small on youtube that are fun to watch. Amazing how many things are discovered simply by accident, so to speak.

I didn't learn about Sub-woofers, for something other than automobiles, till the early 80's. He published an article about it in 78. And the use of wool for damping, that has been discussed here, but I can't recall the details or opinions on it's use, though he seemed to favor it over other materials at the time. Good stuff.
