Coral speakers?

Just picked up a set of Coral BX-3030 speakers for $20 from a thrift. Plywood cabinets with faux wood vinyl, green grille cloth. Haven't taken them apart yet but they are either a ported 2 way or a 3 way. Made in Japan and seem to sound pretty good from what I could tell in the store. Absolutely no info on the internet. They aren't a kabuki speaker like most of the pics I have seen. They also look like a newer model than the other Corals I have seen on the web.

Any ideas? Paid $20 for the pair.

Saw that thread and a few others.

Here are some pictures. They are 3 way.

I tested them out again at home and noticed the attenuation pot at the back wasn't doing anything and the tweeter had no output.

I opened them up and noticed the tweeter had three solder lugs instead of the normal two. I checked resistance across the lugs and it was high (60 ohms or so) I then checked across the negative and the unused solder lug and it was 8-10 ohms. I soldered the hot to the unused one and voila! The top end was there and the knob worked to attenuate the tweeter. They sound excellent. I tested them with Pat Metheny's eponymous album and I was blown away. Definitely an upgrade over the Sansui SP-30's in terms of full rage response, although the midrange in the Sansuis was a bit better. These are 3 way sealed boxes with a 10" LF driver and the Sansuis are a 2 way ported with a 6.5" LF driver so it's not exactly a fair comparison.

Best $20 speaker score ever!!!:banana:

You know, I wasn't sure about them but I trusted my gut response to how well they were constructed that they were a good buy. Plywood cabinets are fairly rare to come by in home audio speakers, and the "Made in Japan" on the back was speaking to me...pardon the pun!
 
Those L-pads look exactly like the ones I bought from Parts Express. Why no picture of the front of the speaker? Do the grills not come off?

It's funny nowadays how "Made In Japan" is another way of saying "Not Made In China"...

A lot of great gear has come out of Japan though... even back in the '60's.
 
Most cabinets these days are made in chipboard, which doesn't handle too well in being shifted or like any moisture on them.

People say they like the sound of the boxes that are made of chipboard :)
