I've been working on a new pair of Cornscala speakers and thought I'd share some details on the build.

Here's the current driver and horn configuration:

  • Woofer: GRS K33-4
  • Midrange Horn: Fastlane Audio Elliptrac 400
  • Midrange Driver: PRV Audio D2200PH
  • Tweeter Horn: Fastlane Audio Elliptrac HF2
  • Tweeter Driver: B&C DE10
I haven't finalized the crossover network yet. I'm considering either the ALK Universal or the ALK CSW-450.

While waiting for the autoformers to arrive, I'm temporarily running a resistive L-pad on the midrange. So far, the speakers sound quite good. The midrange may still be about 1 dB hotter than I'd like, so there's a little more balancing to do.

Once the autoformers arrive, I'll be able to do some more detailed testing and fine-tune the crossover settings.

Still a work in progress, but I'm pleased with how they're sounding so far.

The cabinets still need some finishing work. I've got the front baffles painted, but I still need to apply the veneer and build the grilles.

I haven't decided on the veneer yet. I've always loved the look of oak, so that's definitely a possibility. On the other hand, I may go with something a little more exotic this time.

Still undecided, but that's part of the fun of building these things!

I played with X-overs years ago and designed some without the autoformer just using an Lpad for attenuation and really liked the sound of them. Iron introduces it's own signature. You may just want to play with what you have. Autoformer is not absolutely necessary. All the info and calculator you need to design your own.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind.
