July 20th 1959 - John Lennon's only full-time job.
(His jobs at Viscount Restaurant and Bear's Paw Restaurant were part-time)
In the summer of 1959, John's desire to buy a new guitar, came at the cost of blood, sweat and possibly a new world record in swearing. The working day started at 8 a.m., but the site was so remote, John had to wake at 5 and travel via train changes, and a crosstown walk to reach a lift from his old school friend Tony Carricker and his Dad, who reluctantly agreed to pick him up as he couldn't stand him. If John missed that connection, it meant more train changes and a long walk down country lanes to reach the building site.
Tony Carricker "We were at the lowest of the pecking order, weilding pick-axes, shovelling. John hated it"
John's employment card says he worked from July 20th to August 28th, 6 weeks. Reason given for his sacking was "Unsuitable". Tony Carricker recalls that John's time as a labourer came to an end when he "burned the arse out of the kettle", putting a fire under it without first filling it with water.
On August 28th he bought his first guitar, a Hofner Club 40, like George's, just in time to open the Casbah the following night.
A stroke of luck meant John and Paul were back on track, not having had a gig since January, and George having moved on to his new band. That new band split up, and a combination of half of that band (George Harrison and Ken Brown) plus John and Paul performed on the opening night of the Casbah, resurrecting the name 'The Quarrymen' for the occasion.
The rest, as they say, is history.
