Counterweight for Pioneer PL-L1000

I bought a nice PL-L1000 turntable, and went to replace the failed OEM cart, with a Stanton 681EEE. The Stanton is much heavier, and the counterweight will not allow necessary adjustment.

I see photos of other PL-L1000s, which obviously have an accessory counterweight. I am trying to find a solution that avoids the very pricy replacements. Currently, I have added a 9/16 socket to the rear of the unit, (don't laugh-ok, laugh if you will), but I can't use the dust cover with this solution.

Anyone found a more cost effective solution than the epay offers out there? I am not hung up on OEM look, nor do I need a set screw-I will find a way to fix it into place.

The cheapest solution is taping a penny to the headshell, and rebalancing the headshell accordingly. For a more elegant solution, seek out a heavier headshell or some headshell weights.

Actually, the issue is the opposite-not enough counterweight to balance arm. Unless I find some 'negative mass' widgets for the headshell, I am thinking of buying an inexpensive counterweight and boring the center to allow fitting on the rear of the existing shaft mounted counterweight.
 
If you can't find anything better--look at a place like Mcmaster-Carr for "shaft collars". They fasten with a set screw and can be machined. You could put a rubber tube liner in to damp vibration.

Excellent idea-I will measure and order. Only item missing from specs is weight. Fortunately, they are cheap enough to order 2 or 3, as my experiments show I will need perhaps 50 grams total.

Yeah, they might even offer AL or Iron options. Machining or drilling the collar is an option for getting it into the right weight range.
If you can find a thumbscrew that's the same thread as the set screw, that would be very convenient.
Let us know how you make out.
 
I ordered a shaft collar. I measured and ordered a collar that was just slightly larger than the shaft. I could choose stainless steel as an option.

Looks factory and works perfectly. Collar weighs 28.2 oz.

It actually looks to me like you're missing the counterweight. All I see is the dial and carrier (and your shaft collar). Here's a picture of mine. This is the stock weight attached to the dial shaft.

I am satisfied.

Of course, if I ever sold the TT, I would disclose it's replaced counterweight.

I think someone unfamiliar with the model would see the collar as looking factory-in that it fits very well mechanically, has a set screw to adjust it relative shaft position, is machined well and is Stainless Steel. An obvious step down in bling factor, but "professional" in appearance and function.
