Couple of Infinity questions

I have a couple of Infinity questions, so I thought I would present them to the experts here. I have the RS-4B and want to use some Howard Restore a Finish on them to spruce them up. I would like to hear from anyone who has already done this, what Howards color would be best for the Infinity finish? I have a pretty full can of walnut already. Howards also comes in Golden Oak, which seams like it would be way too light, and Dark Oak, which doesn't look much different than the Walnut I already have. I think this RS-4B oak finish is the same as the RSIIIB, RSII, etc. So what color have you guys used?

The other question regards woofer refoaming. I have already refoamed the 4B's woofers but turns out one of them ended up having a bit of voice coil rubbing, only heard during loud bass heavy passages. I have pulled the woofer and undid the surround where it meets the cone to try to fix it. Using the method where it naturally centers won't work on this particular woofer, it centers in a crooked position, which is why the first refoam didn't work out. Test tone doesn't do it either. My first thought it to shim it to get it right, but I've heard the 902-5030 4B woofer is sealed in the center (under the dustcap) with a little plastic bullet like on the RSII woofer. My question is, is there any way to still shim the coil, will this plastic come off at all? I have shone a flashlight through the dust cover, and it kind of looks like it might come off, but dont want to wreck the dust cover if this is not going to work.

you can try something like Goo-Gone to loosen the glue on the dustcap. it will eventually come off intact if you're careful. however, if the low-frequency tone method isn't centering the coil properly (it really should), there is likely a deeper problem. the VC former may be deformed or there may be some debris in the VC gap.

Yes Im sure the dust cap will come off, but what I mean is under the regular dust cap the voice coil is still sealed, it looks like by a little dome of the polypropylene material. I was wondering if that one will come off, if anyone has any experience with that, can these woofers even be shimmed at all or is it permanently sealed.

Yes, a tone should center the coil, but in this case it does not. It is a little off, not sure if the spider is not perfectly aligned or what. But if the surround held it center it would work fine, I'm just not sure how to keep it there while gluing if I cant shim the coil.:dunno:

so there is a black dustcap on top of what you suspect is a second dustcap that is clear poly? i guess i wasn't that clear on things at first, as i assumed the setup was the same as with the bigger RS's with the clear cap only. i'm sure whatever is underneath will come off if you feel you need to shim. hopefully the surround will be able to keep the cone centered.

Well I decided to dig into it and find out for myself. I used "Goof Off" dabbed with a q-tip on the edges of the black dust cap, and was able to cleanly remove it with a razor blade. Reusing it will be no problem, came off without having to cut it. Sure enough, under the regular dust cap there is another poly cap sealing the voice coil. But it is a cap, and after dabbing some more Goof Off on the edges I was able to gently pry it off with a pocket knife blade. So now I only need to read up on shimming.

I am wondering about what glue to use with the poly woofer. I have searched here and read up on it, and most seem to recommend Aleene's tacky or Weldbond, which I think are similar. I had originally used Weldbond, but when I just now seperated the glued surround from the cone, it seemed to come apart way to easily, like it was just peeling off with no resistance. So now I'm not so sure Weldbond is good for these poly woofers after all. In another thread someone mentioned Aleene's peeling off the same way.

Is there any other kind of glue you guys have used successfully with these woofers, maybe something more similar to what was originally used?

In regards to the finish, I've not used Restor-a-Finish, so I can't answer your question about color. I personally am not a fan of altering finishes too much unless there is significant cosmetic damage which necessitates re-veneering. I actually prefer the natural oak finish, and recommend Howard's Feed-n-Wax as a way to clean, revitalize, and moisturize the wood finish on your 4b's. I've used Feed-n-Wax on all my speakers with wood-veneered cabinets, including RS-IIb's and RS-IIIb's.

The Golden Oak is not as dark as you would think.
When I refinished my RS IIIs however, I opted for a clear lacquer finish.
This isn't the best picture for it because it is showing off the grills, but this is without a stain or anything after totally sanding down the veneer, and its still fairly dark.

Glad you figured out the extra VC cap issue. Sorry I missed your post or I would've relayed my experience.

I had a pair of RSe's where the VC cap popped off while the guy auditioning them for purchase had the bass cranked. I had just refoamed them and was sure there was no rub so was a little pissed thinking they guy just screwed up the woofer. After some investigation I discovered the extra VC cap floating around in there. Glued her back on and all was good.

Regarding the glue, I used the special glue that came with the surrounds. I think I got them from Simply Speakers. Advertised with a particular type jsut for the poly cone. I don't know what kind of glue it was but it's working well on all four of the 10" woofs in my II's.

Quantum 2 Question

Could somebody please explain the tweeter setting "Over FreQ." on the back panel?
And which setting you might choose to set:scratch2: Thanks, Chris

Sorry. I'll post a new thread.
