Courtney Barnett saves Rock!

Im one of those "music aint what it used to be" kinda guy. I hate most all of "todays" music. But I try to hear and like new stuff.

One artist that I saw on tv recently and really liked, went out and bought the LP is Australian 20 something indie rocker Courtney Barnett. Shes been on Fallon twice now. A mix of Dylan with Nirvana and some paul mccartney moves is what i think when i hear and see her band. She has a rambling, 100 thoughts a second kinda way of writing and the music is agreeable with my ears.

Her new single is "pedestrian at best" with the fantastic lyrics:

put me on a pedestal and I'll only disappoint
you tell me I'm exceptional and I promise to exploit you
give me all your money and I'll make some origami honey
I think you're a joke but I don't find you very funny

She writes like Dylan, she moves like Paul and she sounds like Cobain. I got a feeling she is going places. Here is a live performance. http://youtu.be/ZnWyum0ATo0

Thanks for the link. After I listened to that,I pulled up the whole show.I havent been this excited about a new discovery for a while.Right up there with finding The Black Keys,Jake Bugg or Alabama Shakes.
Great stuff.

I don't hear McCartney, Dylan or Cobain. Unfortunately, I hear Courtney Love.

she doesnt sound like paul...just moves like him in the posted video. As for dylan listen to her other songs. Im not the only one saying this. And as for cobain, you should be able to hear it and the three piece band and her a lefty guitarist adds to the affect. Comparing her to courtney love is an insult. At least listen to other songs before slinging low blows like that.

Glad you like it. The first hit she had which i first saw on fallon was Avant Gardner which ironically is not on the new 1st album, it was an ep. Check it out. http://youtu.be/XUkpIShoYN4

I don't hear Cobain or Courtney Love. If I had to pin down a description after two videos I would say it sounds like a cross between The Velvet Underground and 10,000 Maniacs. She's got more of a Lou Reed thing goin' on, the music is straight ahead, kind of minimalist (they aren't a 3-piece power trio like Triumph or Rush) and it sounds good. If she had appeared in the late 70's she would be a rock goddess!

You just think that because her first name is Courtney. Honestly they're nothing alike.

Actually, I think that way because both of them have Schnork as their middle name.

I guess to each his own, I just don't hear anything special.
Time to listen to some Alabama Shakes and some J. Roddy Walston.

She's fantastic live, as well as the rest of her band. I saw them back in October. If you like her music, you have to go see them. I got to see them when it was "CB4" with Dan Luscombe added in on guitar. I've seen videos of them with the usual "CB3" lineup, and they all work great together either way.

By the way, you might also like this band if you want some newer rock. Wolf Alice and Courtney Barnett are the most impressive newcomers I've heard in the past couple years.
