Cover for a Garrard Lab 80?

I just picked up a Garrard Lab 80. I think it is on its original base. I was surprised that there doesn't seem to be any obvious place for a cover to attach. Didn't these tables originally have covers? Did people just leave them open and uncovered?

I have one of those flimsy cake tops. It's cool in its own way but after so many years it has become somewhat fragile. I have seen so many nice home made covers for these early 60's/late 50's Garrards that would make me easily forget the cake top and its fragility. Eventually something will happen, a cat will jump on it or something and crack it for good. The custom dust cover is the way to go instead of trying to score an old, over-priced, vacuum formed cover. If one falls in your lap that's cool, but otherwise the time and money spent getting an original isn't worth it when you can make a really nice one yourself.

yeah I have a cracked up caketop for one of mine as well. Neat, brittle, yellowed, etc. I've given some consideration to having a clone of the fancypants Dual plinth made to replace the stock one and it's brittle cover. Something like this (the one on the right):

that would be reasonably easy to make up, basically its just flat plexiglass slid into a groove cut in the wood lid. No formed plastic or anything like that. I just have no woodworking skills, so I'd have to get someone to make such a magical device for me.
