CR-420 single channel distortion

Hey folks,
This is my first thread in here and just kind of dipping my toes in to the hi-fi problem-solving world.

My CR-420 is giving me intermittent distortion from the right channel. It goes away for a time if I toggle the A/B on/off switch a few times. Would that indicate a problem with the speaker switch relay?

I’ve opened it up and sprayed contact cleaner on where the speaker wires attach, the A/B buttons, the balance knob guts(sorry I don’t know the technical terms for these things), and the stereo/mono toggle. The distortion has gotten better and less frequent but still comes back. The insides all look very good. Very little dust, no corrosion.

I’m game to try lots of fixes though my technical knowledge is pretty limited. I have a multimeter but don’t really know how to use it. I have a solder iron I used once to repair some headphones(poorly). So any guidance would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard again. You most likely have dirty switches and controls.The slide switches really need to be removed from the unit and disassembled and properly cleaned otherwise your just wasting your time and contact cleaner.

Tapping on the relay would give you a good indication if it was the issue. It would cause your distorted channel to either clear up or go intermittent or toggle back and forth.
 
Most of the switches in Yamaha's are either wafer or slide switches. Controls are all potentiometers.
 
I’ve done the tapping test and it doesn’t seem to change anything. So I’ll pull the switches and clean them up. Thanks for the help.
 
So, I’m a bit confused. I understand what the potentiometers are. The buttons are not slides, just push button. But I don’t see how those come out. Aren’t they soldered in?

Should I be taking off the potentiometers?
 
The only push button that is not a slide switch is the power on/off switch.
