Post some photos of all the parts you replaced in the tuner section. Did you try cleaning the air gap tuning capacitor? If so what did you use? Any oily film on the aluminum fins will detune you receiver.
I’ll get some pics of it tomorrow. There was oil and dust in the fins and cleaned it out with canned air. Also I’m not quite sure what the air gap tuning capacitor is. It might as well be that.
I replaced every capacitor with audio grade Nichicons besides the hidden one under the transformer.
Actually I believe it is called and air variable tuning capacitor.It is what the tuning knob/dial cord is turning.
Is there any specific capacitor that I need to use for the tuner section? I replace all of them with audio grade Nichicons. I also used an air can to clean those tuner fins. Maybe dislodging all the oil and dust caused something? I just have no clue where to start trouble shooting.
I get probably only 3 strong channels now and none of them go into FM stereo. Even though the channels are strong it still has poor sound quality. Also the FM muting doesn’t work. When the muting is on I hear no difference in sound and just hear the same static and faint channels. I’m not sure if AM works. I’ll have to check it out.
Look your solder work over real good for inadvertent solder bridges.
Do the tuning meters appear to work?
yeah, I actually get a stronger signal now (around 40). Before the recap my highest signal was around 20 but even that sounded really crisp and clear.
That would be my first guess. Depends on if the AM is FU as well.
Just retouched some questionable joints going to these resistors and transistors and what do you know.... I have clear working FM again! One thing I did notice is that my pointer is detuned. The image below is of a strong channel that is 95.5 but on the pointer it reads 95.7. This is the same for every other channel where they read 0.3-0.4 channels higher than what they actually are. Looks like I probably did something to the tuning wire while I was in there. No biggie for me though. Just happy to have my recapped 620 up and working! Also just changed all the lamps as the old ones were burnt out. In person they have a more greenish tint that isn’t seen in the pics.
