Hi All: not a craigslist find, but a Salvation Army special. For you Realistic fans out there, a nice (8.5 of 10) set of Realistic Solo 3-B's (2-ways both with papercones) for $25 in Hillsboro. Today was a half-price day, so it would have been $12.50. Not really what I need right now, but a "food" for someone else to chew on. They look much older, I guess than they are (ie. looking mid-late 60's, but UsedPrice.com marks them as late 70's-early 80's)

that was quick..

Recognize this setup Brad? Think it might be on the bay as well

Complete Rotel 'silver face' system. 875.00

Not afil.

Good one SLF! You pegged it. :D

The dolphin-pet hero was a logical (?) expansion on the theme of the pet-hero Lassie.

Wow: anyone snatch up what looked like a Dynaco SCA(Stereo Control Amplifier) 80 today on Craigslist for FREE. I was busy working away from the office and didn't notice it (posted about 10:30am) until an hour later. By then it was Bye, Bye. Work can be such a bummer some times. I hope it went to someone who'll appreciate it. Max

Missed it...:tears:

re: Goodwill KLH 20 find

Hey Bucky: an off topic question, but I'm guessing you're in some way related to the U of W at Madison.

Anyway, I picked up 2 KLH 20's in great shape at the Eastside Goodwill Outlet last week for $5. In studying up on them, I note they are the 4 ohm versions of KLH's 17's from the early 70's.

I'm concerned about running them off some of my smaller receivers due to the power/amp draw caused by the low impedance. I know I can't run any other speakers in parallel, but what do you think of running a smaller 8 ohm bookshelf (ie. paridgm, boston, etc.) in SERIES with it to create a "12 ohm" set up?

I'm pretty new at all this, but from the little I've looked at, it seems like 1 possible solution. Do you have any other ideas?

My apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I thought you still might be on-line with an idea or two.

Hey Max, In fact I was born in Mad-town and spent many a night at the brat house. Anyway, I'm not sure about your possible solution but I am sure that others will chime in. What I have done is find a receiver with pre out/ main in capabilities and then split the signal coming out of the pre-out. Send one back into the receiver and the other to another amp/receiver to power the other set of speakers. OR you could get yourself a pre amp with 2 pre-outs, (Carver C4000 for example) and send to two power amps/receivers to power the 2 sets of speakers. Hope this helps. You might want to start another thread to address your question so you reach a wider group of folks.
BTW, congrats on your speaker score. Can't beat the price.
And welcome to AK.

Running another set in series like that will result in dreadful phase shifts, it's just wrong to my ears.

20's can be great 2-ways, coherent, nice East Coasters. 30 wpc is plenty but the more you can give them improves the bass.

Placement tweaking helps but they are not too picky. Enjoy!

Mad Town

I've only been in Mad town a handful of times, but my uncle did his graduate work at the U of W there.

I will seek more technical assistance on another thread, but I wasn't really looking to run 2 sets of speakers. Instead, I was trying to think of a way to bump up the impedance so that my receiver wasn't being drawn by the 4 ohm load from the KLH 20's.

Thanks for the welcome:music:

Thanks for that Susurus! I'll lay off the series idea and just stick to using my more powerful receivers. That way, I'll be less likely to hurt things by drawing out too much current into those four ohm 20's.

Wouldn't be worried about 4 ohm KLH bookshelves. I had two pairs of those, really liked the midrange.

Your ohms rating limits your choice of amps if, for instance, you were running JBLs with 18" as subs actively xover'ed.... (Have those on a big pro Peavey 330 wpc now so no problemo.)
