Craigslist prices are insane!

After checking out Craigslist again after many years of avoiding it simply due to the constant scams going on there, I noticed that people selling there are few and the prices they're asking are beyond anything that I think will ever bring a sale.

Finding a deal there is not going to happen. It appears that there are 3 or 4 people that buy up anything in the area and try to resell it at ridiculous prices. Even if it's in great shape I still can't see how they'll make any sales unless their just trying to show off their stuff and don't care if it sells. I've gotten used to just skipping anything sold by those 3 sellers since it's easy to spot their posts.

It's like they take prices from Reverb (which I have yet to find anything priced reasonably after years of looking) and raise it even more and try to make a local sale with prices meant for nation wide sales (that typically never sell) with little interest.

Selling nation wide might allow a higher price since there's more chances for a person who's looking for specific pieces and could be willing to pay top dollar for a perfect piece. When you're selling at a local level that price is never going to be close to what they're asking on Reverb. I see the exact same stuff and even stuff I sold to others in the past, posted at prices I know will spark no interest locally.

I priced those pieces at half of what they're asking and it still took 6 months before I had anyone interested in it. I see the exact sales posted each time I check and nothing is selling yet the prices remain far beyond real. With shipping costs now, the chances of making as sale on a 150lb set of speakers that need shipping is going to be so expensive that buying them makes no sense. Let alone the size of the package and crating stuff to haul by semi is even more.

Are you using automated searches or do you just check the site when you have a chance? I think part of the problem may be that the well priced stuff sells quickly, and the others just stick around because it doesn't cost anything to run a CL ad.

I'm not really in the market for anything, but I still have a bunch of automated searches on CL and eBay (more to keep on top of the market than anything else) and I do still see good prices from time to time. I will admit, however, that bargains are rarer than they were pre-covid. I also watch FB marketplace and OfferUp, but these are more of a PITA since they don't offer emailed automated search results (FB's search engine is particularly bad, giving me results for all over the country even though I tell it only my local area and no shipping).

Most everything is priced too high. Check out used car prices, top dollar for vehicles that are in need of a lot of work, or need to be towed.

I've noticed a softening the past few months. If you want Sansui, Marantz, Pioneer, not so much, but I have had a few bargains lately. Nothing that exciting, but pretty cool stuff

I'm guilty. I recently decided that I need to get rid of gear that never gets used. But I'm the typical AK penny-pincher, pearl clutching, shouting at clouds old guy who certainly over values his own gear.
If I had a wife, I'd actually blame my high asking prices on her with the trope "She's making me sell it, but no one will buy!" - but no wife, it's me doing it.
I know how my brain works - I'll keep listing gear for what I think are fair prices but it won't sell, so...
Eventually I'll get frustrated and just sell at basement prices and I'll spend extra time talking to the buyers hoping to get a feeling that they are people who will actually use and appreciate the equipment that I once so highly valued.
(EDIT I'm only talking about CL here, I haven't listed on AK\eby yet).

I recently bought a mint and professionally fully restored and recapped Kenwood KA - 5700 amplifier from reverb for $325 with free shipping. It's brilliant! Sounds great and literally looks brand new. Sometimes you get lucky!

There are still deals out there. The guys I know who buy and sell gear frequently have alerts setup. And they also browse all day looking for deals.

I still find deals in my once a day searching. Sometimes it’s just good timing.

I saw this recently. And it was gone in an hour. Marketplace and not CL though

Also from my experience, it’s the old guys that still use CL. Guys that probably know the value of gear better than the younger person on Facebook who is selling some old stereo she found in her dads garage etc.

I still see deals on my local craigslist, but they aren't that common, and they go fast. Sometimes you have to drop what you're doing and immediately go get them. I've noticed the people that grab all the gear and post it for higher prices, aren't selling it in my local market. Some of it I swear had been reposted for over a year now. Stuff posted for not a steal, but a decent price seems to sell just fine

And I thought the $250 I paid for mine a few years ago was a good deal. It too was on CL, and has since been sold (also on CL).

When I started hanging out here 12 years ago the common saying was 'vintage watts cost about a buck a watt'. Seeing marantz selling for $10-$20 a watt shows just how crazy things have become. Personally I think that unless you can fix it yourself no one should be paying more than $3 a watt unless its a really rare or legendary piece, and legendary pieces account for less than 5% of the stuff being sold.

Most stuff is at least 100% overpriced, around here, and by the same few guys. But I look at stuff with coffee every morning and there are things that are priced fairly and sometimes they don't sell for a few days. if I was a garage museum kind of guy I'd have a lot of nice stuff sitting in there.

Every man and his dog is trying to sell stuff for too much, anything that's old is considered vintage and collectable now, so it's got to be worth a fortune. I bought a nice Yamaha C4 preamp, a Technics SL-7 Turntable, Boston Accoustics BA-150 speakers, Polk SDA-1's and a NAD Receiver all from different sellers and for less than $100.00 each a while back, today they would want several hundred each.

Just saw a complete set of Denmark Audio surround sound system for sale, new in boxes, the guy wants $2,000.00 for them since they're worth $5,999.00 as marked on the boxes. Wonder if he's a White Van scammer or someone who got gipped and is trying to make some money out of them or still hasn't woken up?

Boston CL in a nutshell. There are a couple guys that account for probably 50% of the stuff and some of it they've been relisting for years. On the flip side, every now and then I come across stuff that's shockingly cheap and still hasn't sold after several weeks, so there are still deals out there.

This statement leads me to ask if the pricing from years ago is expected today. I mean the crap is older, more run down or stored longer so it should be cheaper, some would think.

Curious what pricing you disagree with as examples because there has been a bit of movement in prices of that many years.

I can personally accept a 30% increase over 10 years ago but today's prices are 3x. But I've been tracking a few things and some correction is happening. "I think"...

So many don't know value so they ask for a big $$ just hoping.
