Craigslist rant

Try it and report back.

Already have. You said 'in person' and thats what I meant. I've never been assaulted or thrown out for this. This seems to be particular to the uniquely sensitive souls in your area. Good luck in your 'mean streets' where vintage audio sales turn to violence for.......sarcasm. Mean; mean streets. (Ridiculous?.......of course not.)

DCinDC is right that this is far too common on CL. Eventually, you won't remember them 5 minutes after you've given up on the sale. Onto the next.

I think the reference was to what was written in the email, to wit:

" 'Whatever price you find on the Internet, email me the lowest found price and we will work off that one.'

Tell me, exactly what was the point of saying that then? LOL Also worth mentioning that the retail price for the LSi15's was only $1,700 while the FXi50's retailed for $600. That comes to a grand total of $2,300. So either you're incredibly stupid or you're just a liar. I'm guessing a little bit of both. You can keep your speakers. And you can shove them up your *** while you're at it. Next time, list prices in your f***ing ad so neither of us has to waste his time. I'll be sure to make a reply to your ad on Craigslist and post our little conversation so people know to avoid you like the plague. $4,000? What a f***ing joke."

I would not call that sarcasm, I'd call it insult. Warranted or not, it's not something I'd quickly say to a stranger face-to-face.

When people own something, they get to sell it however they want. And you get to buy it however you want. Perhaps similar to DCinDC, I rarely negotiate final price over email or the phone, never commit to buying until I can look seller in the eye. As another poster stated, cash in hand, even if it's less than the asked price, speaks more powerfully than endless email.

Granted, that portion was outright aggressive (not the sarcasm I was referring to) and I already stated it was clear he didn't keep a level head, although the sarcasm prior to that was more than acceptable, thats where I'd draw the line. Here's the issue, PRIOR to that the seller already set the standard for the sale.

  • He stated 'cheap' prices without having any.
  • He ignored the info he asked the buyer to obtain.
  • If the amount is not enough, just say so and be clear that your acting as an agent on your fathers behalf.
  • He lied about that price paid for the speakers.

All these things establish a standard for the sale. Thats the insult. If you can't even follow CL's rules, send the buyer on a price hunt, ignore it and then lie?

Again, I wouldn't have gotten that aggressive at the end either; but If I were the seller I wouldn't be surprised.

A lot of us buy and sell a lot. A lot of the sellers on CL don't. This can work to your advantage.

I kinda doubt anyone coulda made this deal work with this seller. The trick is to figure that out fast.

Over the years I have found that George Washington, USS Grant, Alexander Hamilton, and Abe Lincolns talk much better than I do. Sometimes it is better to talk little, show what you are willing to go to, and be prepared to let it go and move on.

It is much harder to see money walk out the door than it is to always be right about what your gear is worth.:thmbsp:

When buying it works out best for me to let the seller set the price. This listing would be flagged because no price was given. Even if the price is high I will contact the seller just to have a conversation.

When dealing with a tough seller I usually will give my counter and tell them to call if they decide to sell. Speakers in my town are very soft in the market place so tough to move. So any I buy had better be a good deal of something special.

I've dealt with naive sellers and arrogant dickhead buyers. The former is much more likely to elicit my compassion to close a deal.

I never said I was in the right here. But neither was the seller. I admit, this pissed me off but I really can't say why. But you guys are right, I should have moved on after he asked me research prices for him. In the end, it's no skin off my back. I may not get the speakers I want this time but I'm sure to come across a set again soon. He's the one who will be relisting his speakers and gear over and over for the next year.
