Crite's re-cap kit worth it?

It's tax time and I might have a few audiophile $$ to play with. I thought about re-capping my KG4.2 crossovers and I know Bob Crites offers a kit to do it. I have his titanium diaphrams and they made a noticeable difference, will new caps help as much?

Fastslappy is correct here.

Bob's networks will give you back stock or better performance with aging network caps that may or may not have high ESR. The caps should be better than stock.

But don't think for a minute that you can't go beyond the stock performance. IMO you get what you pay for!

If you's like better bass IMO buy the largest Air Core Inductor you can afford. You could mount it on a side wall if you had to or the bottom of the cabinet. IMO Iron Core Inductors compress the sound and take warmth from it.

You'd be surprise how far you can go, of course it is system dependent other componets of the system should be good to make it really worth while.

No Regrets and I have spent more than my speakers cost new!

I'm installing the cap kit as we speak in a pair of Forte's.
If I had chance to do it over I would definitely order his fully assembled crossover. After what I'm spending in components (after realizing how shinzy some are) and time I'm probably going to be close to full swap out price.

Bob has been absolutely outstanding as far as help and patience with my myriad of questions.

Bob is a gem :thmbsp:

This is interesting, and yes I know they can sound better than stock (new), the BK tiatanium diaphrams made a noticable difference. What value air core inductor would you suggest for the KG 4.2's?

You bet it is  Do you have a schematic for the 4.2?

Below is the stock Forte network on the left and on the right is my replacement network with some of the worlds largest manufactured Air Core Inductors 8AWG's and I might add worth every penny IMO which today is about $600 for the 4 that I have. Less for 10 or 12AWG's.

Air Core Inductors can contribute just as much as any other component in a crossover especially in the area of warmth.

So how does the stock network sound in comparison? Wimpy! Just the way it looks as well.

I would try Bob Crites first, try e-mailing him. Otherwise you could try Klipsch service Dept.

I couldn't find anything either but I did find I believe the KG 5.2 so I would think the 4.2 would be available to you from Klipsch.

depending on how much your have moved from spec will be directly related to the improvement in sound with Bob's crossovers...what you DO get is peace of mind as your new parts are better than the Klipsch parts were when they went in let alone how they are now AND if you do it like Bob does or have him do it, you get the weight of the crossover off of the terminal cup and onto the bottom of the speaker cabinet...

I didn't notice huger gains but mine weren't far out of spec...the peace of mind alone was worth it for me as they will likely outlast my time on Earth...the Titanium tweeter diaphragms (and likely the newly introduced Titanium mid diaphragms) made a huge difference for the better right away...I have made that upgrade in KG 5.5s, kg2s, Quartets and Chorus IIs...as well as trying them in another set of Quartets and KG 4.5s...I've also done the crossovers in 2 sets of Heresys...Quartets...very pleased with anything from B&K Sound...(BECtoo on this forum)
