Critical size Critical shape

I have a pair of Goodman Triaxiom 212C speakers.
They are in homemade cabinets which seem to be from all the information I've gleaned they in cabinets which are pretty close to specifications.
Specifications being 7800 cubic inches.
The cabinet stands about 4 feet high.

If I built a cabinet of different shape (shorter/wider)but same dimensions 7800 cubic inch would this affect the sound of the speakers.
Or is the speaker design critical to sound

This is close to the set up of the inside of my speakers.
They have that double curtain configuration and are designed for an ARU 172 (acoustic resistance unit) which isn't in these particular speakers.
They have a large cut out which would probably accommodate them.

Certainly the volume is most important. I'd expect any changes in sound due to shape to be minor, though diffraction from the edges of the cabinet can affect the sound.

It sounds like we're doing the same thing. I have a complete set of Altec (Heathkit AS 101) woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, and am putting them in different cabinets because the old cabinets were so ugly. The new cabinets are mahogany and are from mid-1950s EVs. Slightly deeper, slightly skinnier, and quite a bit taller. I've calculated the volume of a buddy's Altec 846U cabinets and back-calculated how much to cut off the height of the new cabinets to get the same volume. I need to remove about 8 inches from them, which has the side benefit of adding to my WAF here. I'll add ports of the same shape and volume.

While I don't have any way to measure how effective this will be, I'm hoping the new cabs will sound as nice as my current Altec Valencias (846A).

Good luck with yours. I'll be watching this thread for experts' input.

I had a guy here a few days ago picking up some JBLs that I sold him.
He said a mate of his had the same Goodman speaker drivers and had them in a shorter wider speaker box and he indicated to a speaker boxes I have with Coral drivers in them.
I did some measurements on them and calculated I would only have to make them about 2 inches higher and about 1inch in depth and the 7800 cubic inches of the original cabinets would be achieved.
26"X 20"X15"
The visitor did say the speaker boxes his mate had were ported and I know that this can be critical
